Dave Trauba named to lead Minnesota DNR’s Wildlife Section

Dave Trauba was reminiscing the other day about growing up in rural southeastern Wisconsin, where his love of the outdoors – including hunting and fishing – was nurtured by his immediate family.
“I grew up in a family with a strong hunting tradition,” said Trauba, adding that he lived near two storied marshes – Horicon and Theresa – where ducks and geese were abundant. “My fondest memories are with my grandpa, dad, and brothers hunting waterfowl. Those were magical times that left an impression on me. Truth is, I was lucky because I knew what I wanted to be when I was a sophomore in high school.”

Bob Mitchell’s Fly Shop in Minnesota closes its doors in St. Paul

Bob Mitchell’s Fly Shop in St. Paul, a popular institution in metro-area fly-fishing circles that opened in Lake Elmo in the late 1970s, has closed its doors for good.
Thorne Bros. Custom Rod & Tackle in Blaine purchased the fly shop from owners Robert and Rhea Hawkins, according to a company announcement Jan. 2.
“Bob Mitchell’s name is synonymous with fly fishing in this region, and we’re honored to carry on that history and tradition in Blaine,” said Ben Olsen, co-owner of Thorne Bros., in an interview.

Farm bill extension gets cold reception from conservation groups

Several national conservation groups say Congress wasted a golden opportunity to do right by hunters, anglers, and conservationists by passing a federal farm bill extension that doesn’t include billions in conservation funding from the Inflation Reduction Act.
The legislation, which President Joe Biden signed before Christmas, extends government funding through March 14 and the current farm bill, passed in 2018, through Sept. 30.

Here are ways to impress your non-hunting friends and family around the table this holiday season

Some traumas are impossible to forget. The case of my late great-aunt’s Christmas goose is one of those such episodes.
Let me explain. Christmas with my feral Irish clan has always been a wild ride. When I was a young boy, and without fail, the McCormick family Christmas included a goose. It was tradition. My grandfather loved to eat them, in large part because he helped raise domestic varieties on his small family farm back in the day.

Many Minnesota hunters, managers report mediocre seasons for grouse, pheasants

With both Minnesota’s pheasant and ruffed grouse seasons running through Jan. 1, upland hunters still have a short, frosty window of opportunity to chase their favorite game birds.
Wildlife managers and hunters are hoping the season’s waning days provide better hunting than what most upland hunters have experienced throughout 2024 for the state’s most popular gamebirds. Several wildlife managers and hunters interviewed by Outdoor News for this story have characterized both seasons as average to below average.

Approached correctly, winter stream trout fishing in southeast Minnesota offers uniqueness, serenity

It was, in retrospect, an incandescently stupid mistake.
I obviously didn’t listen close enough to the weather terrorists on television the previous night. Surely our indispensable news-meteorologists would have warned me about the biting northwest wind that would cut through the southeastern Minnesota river valley the following day and freeze my face like it had been shot with Botox.
I could hear the wind whip the second I opened my truck door. The pretty scene – blue sky above, snow on the ground, gurgling trout stream ahead – belied the bone-chilling cold.

Minnesota DNR to survey state’s pheasant hunters that will gauge opinions on possible changes

After roughly a decade since the last examination, the Minnesota DNR will conduct a pheasant hunter survey beginning in the middle of January.
Dubbed a “mixed mode survey,” the goal is to survey 4,500 state pheasant stamp holders. The survey questions will focus heavily on hunter regulations, hunter satisfaction, and hunter economics. DNR officials stress that the online survey is about collecting facts surrounding state pheasant hunters, not necessarily making any regulatory changes.
“The regulation part is mostly what we’ve heard over time from hunters and DNR managers that they think will improve pheasant hunting.”

So you want to be an ice angler? Here’s how to get started

He’d occasionally drag me onto a southern Minnesota lake when I was a kid growing up in Belle Plaine and Shakopee, but in most years, he’d make one trip to Lake Mille Lacs (or some other famous northern Minnesota destination fishery) with friends for a long weekend of on-ice debauchery.

Will new aquaculture plan fix minnow shortage issues in Minnesota? Public asked to comment

A Minnesota Department of Agriculture draft aquaculture plan, a portion of which details the growing concern surrounding seasonal live-bait shortages affecting state anglers, is open for public comment through Dec. 18.
The state of Minnesota is the process of creating a state aquaculture plan, in hopes of growing the industry statewide. The 85-page draft accesses the current state of Minnesota’s aquaculture industry and provides analysis within several sectors, including bait fish, fish for stocking, fish for food and ornamentals.
