Minnesota DNR creates two positions to enhance tribal outreach efforts

In an attempt to improve communications with tribal governments across Minnesota, the state DNR has created two new positions and is now seeking applicants for an Ojibwe relations liaison and a Dakota relations liaison.
The closing date to apply for the positions is April 1, and the salary range for both is from $64,000 to $94,000 annually. The people selected for the positions will report to the current tribal liaison, Brad Harrington, who’s title will change to director of tribal relations, according to the DNR’s response to an Outdoor News inquiry.

Streams of Thought: Transfer of more Minnesota state lands to tribes could have widespread implications

State legislators often are accused of much taking as sessions progress – your money (taxes), gun rights, just to name a couple. But would it make you feel better to know the elected have been in a more giving mood the past couple of years? Last year, it was Upper Sioux Agency State Park in southern Minnesota, which was transferred to the Upper Sioux (tribal) Community.
For an encore, DFLers in 2024 are upping the ante.

Two state forests among proposed land transfers to tribes in Minnesota

Legislation offered earlier this week by seven Minnesota House DFLers seeks to transfer state forest and other DNR-administered land surrounding Upper Red Lake to Red Lake Nation, the potential implications of which on area landowners, affected counties, and even state-licensed anglers were still unknown at Outdoor News press time.
Among the bill authors was Rep. Sydney Jordan, DFL-Minneapolis and vice chair of the House Environment and Natural Resources Finance and Policy Committee, to which the bill, HF 4780, was referred. Rep. Rick Hansen, DFL-South St. Paul, chairs that committee.

Streams of Thought: Minnesota’s outdoors world loses a dandy with death of Earl Norris Johnson

After a few years on the beat here at Outdoor News, I’d established quite a few friendships with state DNR folks who worked with Minnesota’s fish and wildlife. After a few more years on the beat, I noticed some of those longtime DNR fish and wildlifers happily retiring, riding off toward a sunset at which I’d merely squint, happy in knowing I’d absorbed some of their wisdom and hoping their replacements would be up to the task.

Ice-out surges across Minnesota as prior records begin to fall

To the surprise of few, historical ice-out records continue to fall as early open water progresses northward on Minnesota lakes.
It’s the El Niño effect on full display, and it’s enough to flabbergast even longtime climatologist Pete Boulay, of the Minnesota State Climatology Office, who’s for the past several days been updating the state’s ice-out map.

Minnesota moose population ‘stable,’ while elk count is called off by DNR due to lack of snow

On the same day the DNR announced survey results showing a stable moose population in northeastern Minnesota, state officials in the northwest reported a lack of snow – required for an accurate count – grounded this year’s elk survey.
No elk survey and the important information that comes as a result of it will mean a somewhat conservative approach to the upcoming fall hunting season.

Minnesota DNR mulls reduction in state walleye limit

It’s a conversation that’s seven years ongoing for the Minnesota DNR’s walleye workgroup, citizens who operate in an advisory role.
In other circles, the debate likely has gone on longer: Should the statewide walleye limit be decreased from the current six? Four seems to an acceptable reduction for some anglers. Three, surveys have shown, might be too rich for the average walleye angler’s blood.

Despite warm winter, most Minnesota bears will wait for true spring to emerge from hideaways

It’ll take more than an ultra-warm stretch of late January and early February to roust most of Minnesota’s black bears from their wintertime hideaways.
While a few female “solos” and some males may have decided to explore what the heck winter recently had become, sows in hibernation with their cubs are awaiting a host of other indicators – including hours of daylight – to tell them it’s time to emerge, according to Andy Tri, the Minnesota DNR’s bear project leader stationed in Grand Rapids.

Streams of Thought: Here’s how to follow along with Minnesota’s legislative session

Ready, set, legislate. Because the 2024 session of the Minnesota Legislature began Monday, we’ll offer first a primer on delving deeper into any particular piece of proposed legislation that piques your interest – because it could vastly improve your life afield, because it stands to terminate the existence of the outdoors as you know it, or, somewhere in between.
