Despite lack of snow, limited bait attraction, CWD culling on track in specific areas of Minnesota

While it’s true deer more readily will come to baits strategically placed for CWD-related targeted culling during a severe winter, DNR officials say efforts thus far during a moderately cold season are meeting expectations. That’s in part because the use of bait sites isn’t the only option deployed by those shooting whitetails in specific locations in Minnesota.

Public invited to comment on Lake of the Woods fisheries management plan updates

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is asking people interested in Lake of the Woods fisheries management to share their perspectives about future management of the lake.
The Lake of the Woods fisheries management plan was last updated in 2018. It is important for this update to reflect public values and perspectives on how the lake should be managed.

For gray wolves, new planning is in the works

Federal wildlife officials on Friday rejected requests from conservation groups to restore protections for gray wolves across the northern U.S Rocky Mountains, saying the predators are in no danger of extinction as some states seek to reduce their numbers through hunting.
The U.S Fish and Wildlife Service also said it would work on a first-ever national recovery plan for wolves, after previously pursuing a piecemeal recovery in different regions of the country.

Streams of Thought: Where are we at with a plan for Minnesota’s Wildlife Management Areas?

While the Minnesota DNR’s timber management – mismanagement, depending upon whom you ask – on some of the state’s major wildlife management area units has been well-documented here and elsewhere in recent months (years, actually), we’ve waited patiently for the department to offer us the latest in planning for the 1,500 “other” WMA units across the state.
What did we gain from the recent DNR Roundtable? For me, a sense of deja vu: Didn’t we have this discussion about a year ago?

Are Minnesota deer already in the clear this winter?

A year ago at this time, pink began to appear across a large northern swath of the Minnesota DNR’s “winter severity index” map.
By winter season’s end (the last map was produced May 10, 2023), that pink shade had stretched to the southern limits of the state. In the northern reaches, it had long been replaced by purple and black, and whitetails across the northland had been left in the wake of another severe – measured by cold and by snow – winter season. Odds are, this winter won’t be a repeat of last.

Goal for northeast Minnesota elk reintroduction is 2026

A vision turned plan to reintroduce elk to northeastern Minnesota has progressed for about a decade, and attendees at the DNR’s Roundtable last weekend were told the current goal is to begin moving elk – modest numbers at a time – beginning in February 2026.

The elk would come from the state’s only elk herds – three herds of varying sizes in northwestern Minnesota.
It’s a project jointly pursued by the state DNR and the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. The Red Lake Nation, too, has been involved in relocation discussions.

Streams of Thought: Documentary on Minnesota officer Arik Matson highlights true-life story of tragedy, triumph, and duck hunting

ARIK AND THE EIDER. If you find yourself with a free hour this winter – and why wouldn’t you? – here’s a suggestion, if a true-life story of tragedy, triumph, and duck hunting strikes your fancy.

A quick chat with the North American Grouse Partnership’s Ted Koch

In 2019, shortly after retirement, Ted Koch became executive director of the North American Grouse Partnership. He’d previously  worked 30 years as an endangered species biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Koch lives in Garden Valley, Idaho, the state in which he spent 23 of this 30 years with the USFWS. You might say he accepted the job with the NAGP because of a passion for prairie grouse, but also for his disposition to offer support for an underdog.
