Ice-out surges across Minnesota as prior records begin to fall

Across southern Minnesota, last weekend’s record warmth and wind accelerated the ice-out process on a number of lakes. Some of them are running a month ahead of what’s typical for ice-out. To the surprise of few, historical ice-out records continue to fall as early open water progresses northward on Minnesota lakes.
It’s the El Niño effect on full display, and it’s enough to flabbergast even longtime climatologist Pete Boulay, of the Minnesota State Climatology Office, who’s for the past several days been updating the state’s ice-out map.
