July means it’s time for ‘underspin’ jigs: Here’s how to use them

As July arrives, fishing strategies change as the water warms and, more importantly, young-of-the-year minnow hatches have begun. Insect hatches also are becoming more common, giving game fish more feeding opportunities than at any other time of the season.
So, I spend a lot of time working aggressive baits, hoping to trigger strikes from well-fed fish.

Steve Carney: Details from three perfect days of fishing in Minnesota

During last year’s open-water fishing season, I was approached at a public access while I was with clients and launching my boat, a man from Wisconsin asked me for some tips on fishing Otter Tail Lake. I obliged him and, as it turned out, put him on some fish. My pleasure.
Recently, he booked me to guide him for three consecutive days, and we had a blast. Here are the details.

Steve Carney: Crappies not following usual script in 2023

What an odd spring it’s been. I’m not sure how successful the crappie spawn was, because I didn’t see much evidence on numerous lakes recently.
The cool-beginning spring, I believe, delayed the spawn in the north, and it seems some crappies are now staging along deeper breaklines and not necessarily in the shallow water where they’re supposed to be in at this time of year. Here is what’s been successful for this fishing guide so far.

The shiner: king of early-season walleye baits

There’s no doubt the top option for a minnow bait during the early season is the shiner minnow. And it doesn’t seem to matter if it’s goldies, spottails, or silvers – the shiner is the king of the early season. But if perch are taking my shiners, I switch to medium-sized, lipless crankbaits that resemble shiners. Anything silver and shiny works well.
