Researcher examines origins of blufflands bobcats

As the so-called “Driftless” or bluff-country region that covers potions of four states has seen increasing bobcat populations, an Iowa researcher is trying to learn more about its origins. Did the bobcat population of southeast Minnesota, southwest Wisconsin, northeast Iowa, and northwest Illinois naturally exist or move in from somewhere else?

Last year’s furbearer harvest stable in Minnesota

Unlike last year when the Minnesota DNR extended the otter season, and trapping opportunities for fisher and bobcats expanded to the southern half of the state, trappers shouldn’t expect any changes to this years’ regulations.
“This year, we’re about stability. We’re just basically evaluating the changes that we made last year and making sure it’s working, both biologically and for trappers,” said Jason Abraham, a DNR furbearer specialist.

Mille Lacs winter regulations could look similar to current rule

The Mille Lacs Fisheries Advisory Committee earlier this week met with Minnesota DNR officials to go over fall creel surveys and consider ideas for what the winter walleye and perch regulations could be.
Nothing official was decided yet, as the DNR still needs to meet with Ojibwe bands to discuss what winter walleye regulations and allowed state poundage could look like for the coming year.

Minnesota’s youth, antlerless hunts boost 2025 deer harvest

Following the early antlerless and youth deer hunts, Oct. 16-19, the number of harvested deer in Minnesota ticked up by 11% this season as of Monday Oct. 20.
“We were slow at the beginning. We were actually quite a bit behind last year, at first. … It wasn’t until really this last weekend where we caught up, and we surpassed last year,” said Paul Burr, the DNR’s acting big-game program coordinator.

11-year old takes massive buck during Minnesota’s youth season

Walking out to a deer stand on his family’s acreage in Polk County, Teagan Lee and his mother, Sarah, of Trail, Minn., spooked several deer before they sat down and waited for a buck to come their way.
“I knew I was going to wait for a big buck. I was going to pass up every small buck,” Teagan said.
As the end of shooting hours approached on Saturday, Oct. 16, Teagan said he saw what he was looking for.

MN-FISH and Minnesota DNR leaders talk potential walleye regulation change

When the Minnesota DNR announced it was considering lowering the state’s walleye limit from six to four, MN-FISH Executive Director Mark Holsten recalls wanting to wait until it became more official before the advocacy group became increasingly involved.
Once it became clear the agency plans to move forward on some sort of regulation change, Holsten said that MN-FISH board members met with DNR Fisheries Section Manager Brad Parsons in August to gain that clarity.
