The Nature Conservancy acquires 12,000-plus acres in Minnesota’s Lake County

In mid-October, The Nature Conservancy announced it had acquired 12,271 acres of forested land on the outskirts of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness to preserve for public access.
“These large opportunities to take conservation to the next level are rare, and we were excited to be in a position in this moment to be able to take advantage of this one,” said Ann Mulholland, The Nature Conservancy’s chapter director for Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota.

Minnesota’s bear kill sees late-season increase

While late-season warm weather wasn’t helpful for walleye stocking or early archery harvest, it sure helped out during the final few days of the black bear season this year.
“If I could have the perfect bear-hunting weather, it would be 80 degrees, sunny, with like a 5- to 8-mile an hour wind,” said bear-hunting guide and owner of Fall River Outfitters, James Wallner.
And Mother Nature delivered with a spell of warmth the first week of October.

Warm weather delays Minnesota DNR’s fish-stocking efforts, and muskie plan nears approval

While waiting for temperatures to drop at the end of September and into early October, Minnesota DNR fisheries crews were also waiting to begin stocking walleyes – which kicked off a few weeks later than usual.
TJ DeBates, the east metro area DNR fisheries supervisor, said stocking was delayed due to warm weather, but that has become a new normal in recent years, he added. “We’ve had years like this where things get condensed and you’ve just got to get that much more work done in a shorter time frame.”

Ortonville in spotlight for Minnesota Governor’s pheasant hunt opener

Hunters adorned with blaze orange last Saturday hit the public lands surrounding Ortonville in western Minnesota, where the DNR, Explore Minnesota, and the Governor’s Office hosted the 13th annual pheasant-hunting opener event.
It’s an annual festivity that holds special meaning for Gov. Tim Walz, he said.
“We were pheasant hunters, not deer hunters, pheasant and grouse,” Walz told Outdoor News, regarding his outdoor experience.

How have crossbows impacted deer, turkeys in Minnesota after two seasons? DNR releases report

As required by the state Legislature after allowing all hunters to use crossbows to hunt deer and turkeys, the Minnesota DNR has compiled its crossbow report for the 2023 and ’24 seasons. The agency says data from those first two seasons suggest crossbows have not adversely impacted the two species.
“In the past, the archery harvest has been a negligible (number) of deer taken, so we’ve never really had to calculate,” said Joe Stangel, the DNR’s southern region wildlife manager.

Minnesota elk hunter overcomes hectic moment with a bad shell to take 6×6 bull

A few hours after the elk season opened for two Minnesota hunters on Saturday, Sept. 13, Jayme Fisher, of Ranier, pulled the trigger with a bull in his sights, about 35 yards away.
He pulled the trigger, but no boom followed. “I had a bad shell,” Fisher said.

Minnesota DNR skeptical about algae harvesting to eliminate blooms

Growing up in Lake Crystal, Minn., Mike Roll remembers swimming and enjoying the splendor of the town’s namesake – Lake Crystal.
Once he had children, he wouldn’t let them swim in the lake’s waters.
“In my lifetime … my lake has been destroyed. So, in my mind, I was like, well, how many others have been destroyed that other people’s kids will never get a chance to use them?” Roll said.

National park access is limited in Minnesota during federal government shutdown; here’s what to know

Minnesota is home to five National Park Service-managed properties: Voyageurs National Park, the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, Grand Portage National Monument, Pipestone National Monument, and the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway.
Each destination is offering limited services to visitors during the federal government shutdown, but there is no park-specific information on which services are available, as 68% of the workforce has been furloughed.
