Minnesota DNR offers clarification regarding food plots, baiting for deer

In response to information circulating on social media related to hunting near food plots, Minnesota DNR Enforcement officials are clarifying what is illegal and legal about hunting near such plots, designed to provide whitetail forage as well as attract other wildlife.
Food plots – areas of grain, corn, soybeans, or clover – offer refuges for deer to graze throughout the year, including during winter. These food plots may be located on public or private lands.

Government shutdown ends, without staff cuts

After President Donald Trump signed a funding bill that ended a 43-day federal government shutdown on Nov. 12, hundreds of workers returned to their jobs across Minnesota, including conservation employees who’d been placed on furlough by Pheasants Forever and other groups.
“When the government’s shut down, everything is shut down including program payments and conservation, technical assistance,” said Jared Wiklund, Pheasants Forever/Quail Forever director of communications.

Remote border crossing from U.S. to Canada still in limbo

With fewer than 50 days until a Remote Area Border Crossing permit extension period ends, there has been no update from the Canadian government regarding proposed revisions to the program that put a hold on permit issuance and renewals.
The permits are used mostly by travelers who cross from the United States into Canada often by way of water. They allow border crossing without the need for a stop at conventional on-land customs checkpoints.

Minnesota’s fall turkey kill dips slightly in 2025

Despite a decent spring harvest this year, the fall turkey take dipped by about 30% in Minnesota, with a preliminary total of 1,018, with license sales decreasing by about 9%.
“It’s a little more difficult to bag a fall bird, but you’re not going to be seeing a ton of other turkey hunters out there, so it definitely is a good opportunity,” said Roy Churchwell, the DNR’s resident gamebird consultant.
