Warm temps likely to soon end ice fishing on Ohio waters of Lake Erie

On Feb. 10, sunny skies and temperatures that reached the mid-40s gave Lake Erie’s ice sheet the first insult to its integrity and made it no longer considered unscathed.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced that Lake Erie’s ice coverage that had peaked at 96% this winter was down to 92% by mid-February. A rivulet of water flowing down the boat/ice ramps eroded the edge of the ice field along the shoreline, the first insult to the formerly pristine hardwater cover that was formed during 26 straight days of below average arctic temperatures that had not eclipsed the freezing mark in weeks.

Ice fishing on Lake Erie finally comes to fruition

Back in the fall when the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) made its winter forecasts, the NOAA Climate Prediction Center offered the usual ambiguous predictions that are not much better than a coin toss.
The Old Farmers Almanac’s overall forecast for the lower Great Lakes was partially right, calling for “above normal temperatures and lower than normal precipitation with potentially colder periods in mid to late December, early and late January, and early February.”

Ohio’s Outdoor Trailblazers: Joe Uhinck is an all-around sportsman

Minus his time away at college, Joe Uhinck has been a lifelong resident of Marblehead, in the heart of Ohio’s fishing, hunting, and trapping mecca on the North Coast.
Early hunting and fishing experiences were with his great grandpa, Carl Uhinck, who was an avid hunter/fisherman who lived to the age of 101, especially rabbit hunting and perch fishing. However, it was while goose hunting with friends when an epiphany went off that told Joe Uhinck that he needed to follow an outdoors-related career path.

Ohio’s Bucyrus fur auction canceled, but Kidron still on tap

Due to not enough trappers registering for the Bucyrus fur auction, the Ohio State Trappers Association (OSTA) cancelled it, with Kidron becoming the organization’s sole event of this type in 2026.
With less than 10 sellers registering ahead of time, fewer buyers would have elected to attend in Bucyrus, which would have likely led to lower prices offered for the pelts, according to OSTA fur auction coordinator Shawn Bentley.

Ohio angler leads effort drawing attention to perch issues in Lake Erie

Jim Saxa, of Mentor, Ohio, has been leading a push that he calls the Yellow Perch Restoration Initiative since 2022 to force the Ohio Division of Wildlife (DOW) to take action to boost the yellow perch population in Lake Erie’s Central Basin.
The fisheries agencies adjacent to Lake Erie (Ontario, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York) divide Lake Erie into four perch Management Units.

Final algal index on Western Lake Erie rated mild in 2025

On Dec. 4, after a longer wait than usual to learn the results, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released its annual Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) Severity Index (SI) score for Western Lake Erie.
The score is based upon calculations of the peak 30-day biomass of algae in the Western Basin of Lake Erie.

‘Bomb cyclone’ delivers ducks to Ohio’s North Zone hunters

During a weather event that only occurs an average of 18 times per year worldwide – a “Bomb Cyclone” – that was predicted days in advance dropped temperatures Dec. 27-28 from nearly 60 degrees to the 20s overnight and created hurricane force winds in parts of Lake Erie.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) called for occasional waves up to 26 feet to form Dec. 28-29 in the open waters off Geneva to Conneaut in Ohio and in the Eastern Basin near Buffalo.

Ice formation still elusive on Ohio waters of Lake Erie

After a week of above average temperatures that also led to storm force winds and water level fluctuations in the days following Christmas, Lake Erie’s ice cover that was not fishable yet was set back to near zero.
After temperatures reached 60 degrees on Dec. 27, they plunged into the 20s in the days that followed and allowed ice to begin re-forming once the wind calmed.
