Lake Erie ice melting off while Ohio rivers warm some ahead of the walleye run

After a week of a historic thaw just after Valentines Day in Ohio, the Lake Erie ice that was an incredible 15-22 inches thick was severely damaged by the intense direct sun, some minor amounts of rain, and then strong winds.
When ice sheets separate, currents and wind allows the floes to break apart and drift away from the shoreline and into the open water to the east.
