Warm temps likely to soon end ice fishing on Ohio waters of Lake Erie

On Feb. 10, sunny skies and temperatures that reached the mid-40s gave Lake Erie’s ice sheet the first insult to its integrity and made it no longer considered unscathed.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced that Lake Erie’s ice coverage that had peaked at 96% this winter was down to 92% by mid-February. A rivulet of water flowing down the boat/ice ramps eroded the edge of the ice field along the shoreline, the first insult to the formerly pristine hardwater cover that was formed during 26 straight days of below average arctic temperatures that had not eclipsed the freezing mark in weeks.
