Fall muskies: It’s prime time to go after these big predators

Perseverance is a valuable skill if want to catch muskies in the fall, or anytime for that matter. Steadfast confidence that the time invested will teach you what a muskie is, what it needs from the lake or river you are in, and what it takes to provoke a strike. No getting around time on the water.
Shorter days add urgency as prey species prepare for the coming cold. A change in their behavior is not lost on the predator population. A muskie may be lurking nearby, tucked in a backdrop of cover, waiting. It may not be ready to eat, but prey at point-blank range? Instinct will trigger the reflex.

Winging your way to Ohio’s waterfowl opener

Ohio’s October waterfowl opener is unique in that the weather is nice, a pleasant time to be out duck hunting. Excitement runs high. Nothing like the sounds of a mallard in the distance at sunrise. And the wing beats, you may not even see them yet, but you can hear them.
It just does not get any better than this. To do it right means you cannot drop everything and go when the season rolls around. Here are a couple of things to consider.

From a modest start, steelhead fishing gets in the blood of Ohio angler

Growing up near the Rocky River, Ken Harper’s interest spanned the usual assortment of species: panfish, bass, and walleyes, to name a few. That was until a steelhead in the early 1980s changed what he thought of fishing. One fish was all it took. He was 19.
It began with a friend of his brother. No one in particular, just a guy who had been talking about a fish called the steelhead. You could catch them in Cold Creek. Harper knew the creek; he caught rainbow trout there. But, if you wanted to catch a steelhead, you had to go at different times of the year.

Rocky outcrops attract fish: Here’s how to fish them

When I see the outcrop in my favorite lake, my thoughts go back to a smallmouth. It was a cold day in the fall. Dark with rain, one of those precursors to winter I doubt many enjoy. The conditions may have been why the whale decided to hang near the surface past noon. What a thrill, until it threw my jig as it came to the surface.
I look for outcrops in other lakes, places where steep banks enter the water, especially where the outside bend of an old creek channel meets the bank. I often find exposed bedrock entering deep water, in the main basin and the larger bays with tributaries.

Mid-season Doves: Here’s what to do as the hunting pressure picks up

The work begins as the birds are on to me, no longer flying low where they once did. Not dropping in to the decoys without hesitation. So it goes with each passing day. The easy birds were yesterday.
The birds that fell on opening day were young birds. By October, the birds are older, more apt to be part of the local flocks, rather than transients. The birds look larger as they fly past. Some hunters get caught up in the moment, the larger birds appearing closer than they really are.

Here’s what to do now to be ready for Ohio’s fall steelhead action

Are you ready for your first steelhead trip of the season? It is easy to forget important gear. Just as bad is arriving to find waders that leak or boots coming undone.
You may find broken tackle or things not where you expected to them, if you have them on you at all. Valuable time is lost tackle hunting in the nearest store(s), which may not carry what you need. Many of the common problems on long distance trips can be avoided. Planning is an investment.

Sept. 1 is near, and Ohio outdoor users soon have many options

It started in 1968, waiting for squirrel season to roll around. I might as well be waiting for Christmas. Never did I imagine that there would be a dove season someday. The same for Canada goose in September. Those days are now real and hunting season is nearly here in Ohio.
Preparation is key. Comfortable boots or waders, ammunition, game bag, or equipment pack. Protective eye wear (shooting glasses or sunglasses), insect repellent, breathable clothing, can make a day safe and comfortable.

Are you ‘rifle ready’ for the fall?

Cleaning is necessary after a day of rain, a week of hunting, or a session of competitive shooting. Regular maintenance, removing residue from the barrel and action, keeps a gun reliable.
Practice, too. Who suffers from too much practice? Each spring I must focus on trigger squeeze. A childhood of 12-gauge shotguns and “punkin balls” continues to encourage my fall back to flinching.
