Coyote hunting broken down into basics

Coyote hunting is familiar in some ways, unique in others. It can be a blend of skills learned from other animals, such as scouting for deer or choosing a location to call for turkeys. Then again, it can be altogether new, not as easy as it sounds, making a wary predator come to you.

Longear sunfish are feisty fighters of late winter, early spring in Ohio

A longear sunfish is unlike any other. Glimmering fresh from the water, it seems too spectacular to be here, as if had been blown inland from the barrier reef of an exotic land. It is a real treat to see, if you get the chance.
There are two subspecies, the northern longear, Lepomis megalotis peltastes, and the central longear, Lepomis megalotis megalotis. The northern longear is the smaller of the two.

Here’s how to take advantage of what can be a short ice-fishing season in Ohio

In late December, the polar vortex started to lose stability. A sign of a weakening vortex is the westerly winds, blowing strong with bitter cold air. By the second week of January, it seemed more certain what was happening to the weather.
Thoughts of ice fishing became hard to ignore, even if it amounts to nothing more than a few days of opportunity, there will be ice here and there.

Ingredients of accuracy: Common complaints among rifle hunters and how to tighten those groups

Straight-walled cartridge rifles dominate the regular gun season with hunters happy to put down their shotguns. They scooped up the initial offerings coming to market. It seemed reasonable at the time to think any rifle would be better than a shotgun..

Ohio sauger fishing is a challenge; here are some tips

I needed time to think it over.
I thought I knew what I was doing. Fishing for saugeye turned out not like I expected. I figured it to be the same as the Lake Erie walleye I grew up with in the Western Basin. Catching them proved far different from raising them. Seven years of aquaculture with walleye and saugeye failed to bridge the gulf between fisheries biology and animal behavior.

The tried and true shotgun for deer still fits

Data gathered by the Ohio Division of Wildlife suggested 66% of deer hunters carried shotguns during the 2015 regular gun season. Though not recent data, the number interested me at the time, what with 2015 being the second season for legal straight-walled cartridge firearms for deer.

Before the cartridge regulation change, I had gone back and forth on what to carry for the gun season. From muzzleloaders to the occasional bow and arrow, there has to be a better way, like other hunters, perhaps. I had been thinking it was the gun, not me.

Here’s how to catch Illinois’ saugeyes in the fall

A seasonal mystery it is, saugeyes in the fall. Finding them can be as bad or worse than summer saugeyes, a most difficult feat for me. Perseverance to stay with it can be tough; it can take all day. Other species hitting the line with ease make for a tempting distraction.
I am learning the quirks needed for success in the fall, some obvious, some not so much. The learning never ends, probably why it is so much fun.
