Mid-season Doves: Here’s what to do as the hunting pressure picks up

Doves behave differently after opening day of the hunting season and require refined tactics on the part of hunters to put them in the game bag. (Photo by Joe Martino)
The work begins as the birds are on to me, no longer flying low where they once did. Not dropping in to the decoys without hesitation. So it goes with each passing day. The easy birds were yesterday. The birds that fell on opening day were young birds. By October, the birds are older, more apt to be part of the local flocks, rather than transients. The birds look larger as they fly past. Some hunters get caught up in the moment, the larger birds appearing closer than they really are.
