Fly-fishing for smallmouth: Streams, rivers a great place to start

Ever wonder whether fly fishing is all it is cracked up to be? If you want to give it a try, a more noble native fish will be hard to find than the smallmouth bass. The flowing water where smallmouths like to live is often less crowded than lakes, and the scenery along rivers and streams is unmatched.
The learning begins with the cast. A weighted fly increases the challenge in proportion to how heavy it is.

Hoover Reservoir angler lands Ohio’s new record bigmouth buffalo

Andrew Peffly went long-lining on July 8, trolling for crappies with 10-, 12-, 14-, and 16-foot rods. He goes long-lining for fun, often with family and friends. When serious, he goes single pole with forward-facing electronics.
At the end of the day, little did Peffly know that he would be the latest fish record-holder in Ohio.

Perfect your presentations during tough river fishing in the heat of summer

Spring is a magical time for an angler to be wading in a river.
Summer is a different story. Quality fish are not where I left them in the spring. Conditions change, the fish adjust to survive. I blame the lack of rain, the lifeblood of a river. Groundwater seeping in can only do so much.

What you need to know to be ready for Ohio’s fall dove season

Dove season provides hunters an obvious opportunity display of wingshooting skill. The doves will be there, so will the misses, which is why I go I suppose. To show the birds how lucky they are, to fly over me instead of someone else. Another might hit them.
Controlled hunts are held in District 1 and District 5 in Central and Southwest Ohio, respectively. The lottery to attend one opens in July. Several other wildlife areas provide additional opportunities with dove fields, and there’s no need to enter a lottery to hunt a dove field.

Here’s how to catch fish using Santee Cooper Rigs

Credit for the Santee Cooper Rig is given to K.C. Nelms, an angler from northeast Georgia. He often fished the Santee Cooper Lakes region of South Carolina in the 1980s. At first, I had no interest in trying it. I felt my way of rigging for catfish was close enough to be just as effective.
My opinion changed when the blue catfish program began in Ohio a little over 10 years ago.

Try fly-fishing for largemouths this summer: Here’s how to do it

If you are interested in fly-fishing, the largemouth bass is an excellent species with which to start. Matching the hatch for an aggressive demeanor is no big deal. Look at the mouth on the largemouth. They will eat about anything that resembles food.
Many anglers are ahead of the game, they know where to find them and how to catch them. Learning a new technique with strange tackle is the challenge.

Consider targeting the skipjack herring on the Ohio River

I never gave skipjack herring a second thought – an overrated sardine, I thought – until I saw firsthand. The day started like any other day. Minnows jumping in the air changed it up some. I rifled a cast to parlay the unknown predator. My excitement cannonballed a 3⁄8-ounce sinker Carolina rigged to a swimbait, complete with a bird’s nest.

Springtime is the right time for sunfish

Spring is a consistent time to find bluegills and other sunfish. No need for a fishing forecast when they gather in the shallows to spawn. The pre-spawn catch can be as good as those taken during the spawn. Both events become excellent opportunities for finding the largest bluegills within casting distance of shore or from a small boat.

For distance, go with a baitcaster

I was just fine with spinning reels. A 43-inch flathead catfish changed all of that seven years ago. That Scioto River flathead in Ohio fought differently from the blue catfish I had been catching in Hoover Reservoir. I could not get enough of the submarines with spines.
Both species hammered home my need for stronger tackle. Heavier spinning gear seemed like the logical choice, but not this time.
