Ammo prices remain stable despite concerns

A press release from Vista Outdoors has sent a small tremor among the hunting and shooting community that ammunition and gunpowder shortages and spiking prices are just around the corner.
Yet scant evidence seems to exist that such dire worries are imminently looming, though ongoing and underlying roots could see the strangling ivy put a chokehold on ammo availability.

Jeffrey Frischkorn: My vote for Ohio state fish? The largemouth bass

For the past couple of Ohio Outdoor News print issues, the reader’s “Sounding Board” has asked a simple enough question: “Is the walleye a good choice for the official state fish of Ohio.”
In the Aug. 2 issue, of the five responders, only fellow Ohio Outdoor News columnist Steve Pollick (brave soul that he is) picked a species other than the walleye. He made a compelling argument for the smallmouth bass. Compelling, perhaps, but not convincing.

Jeff Frischkorn: Ohio Division of Wildlife offers insight into methodology behind state’s controlled hunt draw process

Frequent Ohio Outdoor News contributing writer Larry Moore enjoyed my Aug. 16 story in the publication on the Ohio Division of Wildlife’s annual special hunt lottery.
While the story piqued Larry’s interest – having been selected two consecutive years for small-game hunts – he still had questions. These were related to the program’s operational aspects. The question intrigued me, as well. Enough so that I posed Larry’s inquiry to Brian Plasters, the wildlife division communication manager.

Most who apply for Ohio’s controlled hunts face long odds

That people believe in miracles is reflected in how many of them are willing to accept the one-in-302.5 million odds of winning the Mega Million Dollar lottery by matching all of the numbers and the Powerball.
Yet hunters are no different. And though the odds of winning one of the Ohio Division of Wildlife’s lottery-selected controlled deer, small-game, waterfowl, and waterfowl blind hunts are better than one-in-302.5 million, the chances are still stacked against an applicant.

World IT outage hits Fish Ohio

The worldwide Internet technological glitch that rippled across the world in late July included accessing the Ohio Division of Wildlife’s Fish Ohio program.
At the heart of the issue is Microsoft, the leader in the world wide web system whose tentacles reach into very nearly everything today. It is believed that two factors came into play. Troubles with Microsoft’s “cloud sourcing” system is generally regarded as the first issue. This is the one that has hammered airlines, causing delays and cancellations across the board.

Jeff Frischkorn: Poison ivy is one remarkable plant

It surprised me when I began researching poison ivy that it is an amazing plant with a rather extensive – and impressive – taxonomical dossier.
Yet it is the plant’s sinister side that gets all of the ink, and rightfully so. The fluid secreted by the plant’s “leaves of three, leave it be” pattern is a remarkable product. However, so toxic is the clear sap that it sends an estimated 350,000 Americans at any one time seeking relief from the almost always unavoidable burning itch the secretion offers.

Jeff Frischkorn: There’s something about fishing farm ponds

The black, soft-plastic frog with its pair of sensually undulating rubber legs almost made it safely across a gap in the long-leaf pondweed.
Had the fishing lure completed its journey across the interlocking spatterdock leaves, safety would be assured. Of course, since this was a lure the whole purpose was to fool a bass into thinking this placebo was the real deal. The black froggie did – and did not – make it across, though. The “did” part came after the “didn’t” part. That is when a bass of around 15 or so inches created an audible and visual geyser of water when it nicked the lure.

Outdoor Writers of Ohio, Division of Wildlife get word out on Ohio’s record fish program

In an eureka moment, the several decades-old Outdoor Writers of Ohio (OWO) stepped into the 21st century regarding its slightly less young Ohio Record Fish Program.
The Outdoor Writers of Ohio is the statewide nonprofit organization of professional journalists – mostly Ohioans – who specialize in the ever-widening scope of the outdoors. “OWO”– as it is known less formally – is the only such body that keeps the official record fish list for any state, including Ohio.

Jeffrey Frischkorn: Can the freshwater drum get some respect?

When you consistently find yourself in last place as a popular sport fish, it’s a tough spot to be cheered by Lake Erie anglers. Even if you are a biological hero in your own right.
And for the freshwater drum – aka, sheepshead, Lake Erie silver bass, gray bass, “trash fish” – not many anglers request an encore presentation after reeling in just one fish. That includes if that last drum was Fish Ohio award-worthy.
