How might cold, snowy winter in Ohio impact fish and wildlife? It varies by species

It’s been a hard snow shovel of a winter if you’re human.
Not so much, however, for fish, wildlife, and even plants. To them, the all-too frequent wintery blasts are just part of their genetic survival strategy. Experts in their respective fields of biology and botany are not particularly concerned, either. Even for a winter that’s not entirely over.

Final harvest numbers show it was a good year to be a deer hunter in Ohio

Ohio’s deer hunters didn’t shoot a record number of animals this past season, though they did score the fourth highest-ever tally with 238,137 animals.
And with fewer hunters participating, too. In fact, the 238,137 figure is more than the total number of deer taken from 1943 through 1980. Indeed, for the last day of the 2024-25 season, 834 deer were shot. That figure is more than each of these four seasons: 1943, 1944, 1945, and 1952.

Firearm-buying habits go through period of change at start of second Trump term

The American shooting public’s interest in buying firearms has slowed some, though experts are not anticipating another “Trump Slump.”
Following President Barrack Obama’s eight-year term, firearms sales were approaching the Kármán line where outer space begins. Then gun sales fell back to Earth under Donald Trump, hence, the “Trump Slump.”

New deer hunting regulations in Ohio to be laid out soon

Now that the shooting’s over, Ohio deer hunters can spin tall tales and tell great lies. But for the state’s deer biologists, the work has just begun.
“There is very little time between the end of the deer hunting season and regulation proposals for the following season,” Clint McCoy, the Ohio Division of Wildlife’s deer biologist, recently told Ohio Outdoor News.
However, McCoy says, the wildlife division has enough information by the close of muzzleloader season “to satisfy the harvest data needs that we have for making any regulation changes”

Ohio’s record buck kill already set during 2024-25 season with time remaining

Deer hunters in Ohio are approaching the finish line, and the last baton hand-off saw a seamless transfer.
During the recently concluded four-day statewide muzzleloading deer hunting season (Jan. 4-7), hunters killed 13,476 white-tailed deer. That figure is 712 more animals then were reported during the 2024 statewide muzzleloading season (12,714 animals), and 395 more deer based on the three-year average (13,081 deer).

Jeff Frischkorn: More study needed on straight-walled cartridges’ impact on deer harvest in Ohio

There’s an adage in outdoor journalism that says never to argue with a biologist – even when you are correct.
I reminded myself of this axiom since the figures arrived for Ohio’s general firearms deer-hunting season and the two-day bonus firearms deer-hunting season. At the time, I should have realized what I was getting myself into when I suggested that – as Sherlock Holmes said: “Something is afoot.”

Jeffrey Frischkorn: Rock Creek Conservation Club ‘turkey shoots’ are a time-honored tradition

They don’t really shoot turkeys anymore.
In fact, with today’s turkey shoots many organizers don’t even dole out hams, much less, frozen Butterballs. Instead, a winner may walk home with pork chops, baby-back ribs, a side of bacon, veal patties, shrimp, or even gift cards.
Recently, my wife, Bev, and I handed over nine bucks each to participate in my sportsmen’s club’s annual Thanksgiving Day eve turkey shoot. The Ashtabula County’s Rock Creek Conservation Club in Ohio has facilitated this shoot for longer than anyone can remember.

Week-long gun season good to Ohio deer hunters as harvest reaches highest total since 2011

Deer hunters flocked to Ohio’s fields and forests Dec. 2 through Dec. 8 to help put a dent in most of the state’s 88 counties.
Based on data provided by the Ohio Division of Wildlife, hunters checked in 87,192 deer during the week-long gun season. This is the highest total since 2011 when 90,282 animals were taken. During the 2023 Ohio firearms deer hunting season, hunters reported killing 70,103. Likewise, the the three-year average is 70,806 animals.
