Partnerships in Ohio help hunters serve the hungry

The spaghetti, tacos, and lasagna served at the City Mission of Findlay, Ohio, likely is made with ground venison, not ground beef, and chances are the mission’s guests never suspect the difference.
Cooked properly, venison can be substituted for ground beef in nearly every recipe without lifting a questioning lip, according to Miriam Ibarra, the mission’s food service manager.
During the 2022-23 hunting season, hunters donated 1,132 deer for free processing. That meat was then distributed to the needy through 60 local charitable organizations and food banks.

Fracking on state lands, solar energy hot topics right now in Ohio

Energy – clean and otherwise – is a hot topic of conversation all over Ohio these days – and especially in Madison County.
I received a letter from the Ohio Environmental Council (OEC) last week decrying HB507 that requires the state to lease the state’s parks, wildlife areas, and other public lands for drilling and fracking.

Ohio DNR adds 29th old growth forest to network

One of Ohio’s first designated state nature preserves now has a new trail and a new distinction.
Stage’s Pond SNP is now home to a new, wheelchair-accessible walking trail and the state’s 29th designated old growth forest. In a dual ceremony on Oct. 5 at the preserve, state and local officials cut the ribbon to open the trail and conduct tours of the 31 acres of white oaks, bur oaks, black walnuts, and honey locusts now included in the national Old-Growth Forest Network.

Outdoors comes to life through artists

As part of its “Arts in the Parks” program, the Ohio DNR and Ohio Arts Council premiered an exhibit of paintings by Tina Husted at Deer Creek State Park Lodge on Sept. 17. Husted is the wife of Ohio Lt. Governor Jon Husted.
Initiated in January 2023, “Arts in the Parks” aims to celebrate the state’s talented artists and combines the wonders of nature with a setting where they can best be enjoyed, according to Ohio DNR Director Mary Mertz.

Coyote attacks in Ohio are rare, but recent attack on 3-year-old shows they sometimes occur

A coyote attack on a 3-year-old girl in south Columbus in early September raised questions about the crafty canines and their growing presence on the Ohio landscape.
According to the Ohio DNR, coyotes were historically found in the prairie West. And they began moving eastward into Ohio in the 1930s. By 1988, they were found in all 88 counties. Katie Dennison, a biologist with the Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife, said the migration was the result of Ohio’s deforestation and abundance of open fields, as well as a lack of predators like wolves and cougars.

‘Root of Evil’ case takes down ginseng poachers in Ohio

The Ohio Division of Wildlife (DOW) is wrapping up a two-year undercover investigation into the illegal buying and selling of wild ginseng – an herb with a root that is highly valued (mostly in China) for its medicinal and spiritual qualities.
“Operation Root of Evil” ran from September 2018 to September 2020 and covered three ginseng harvest seasons, according to Kirk Kiefer, an investigator with the DOW who headed the operation.
