New nature preserve created on Ohio’s Little Darby Creek

A total of 430 acres along Little Darby Creek became Ohio’s 144th state nature preserve during a dedication ceremony and ribbon cutting on June 28.
As a state nature preserve, the area will have special protection against modification, encroachment, or other use that would destroy its natural beauty and aesthetic value. Ohio DNR Director Mary Mertz said the dedication culminates more than 10 years of work on the part of the agency to purchase and protect land along Little Darby Creek.

Ohio University study shows state could support limited bobcat trapping

Ohio could support a limited bobcat trapping season, based on results of a recent three-year study of the wild felines by researchers at Ohio University.
That was the message Mike Reynolds, administrator of wildlife management for the Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife, delivered to the Ohio Wildlife Council in April. The division is now in the process of drafting a management plan for the wild cats whose population in the state has increased dramatically over the last 20 or so years, according to Katie Dennison, furbearer biologist with the Division of Wildlife.

There’s good news from the Chronic Wasting Disease Surveillance Area (DSA) in Marion, Hardin and Wyandot counties.
“I can’t say the disease is spreading there,” Mike Reynolds told the Ohio Wildlife Council in April. Reynolds is executive administrator of wildlife management for the Ohio Division of Wildlife (DOW).
His conclusion came while reporting on a targeted deer removal effort on private and public lands in the DSA.
