During the evening of March 14 and early morning of March 15 tornados cut a swath of destruction across Ohio from Grand Lake St. Marys to Alum Creek State Park.

Ohio teen scores a big double with whitetail, mule deer last fall

It was a Sweet Sixteenth birthday celebration in a deer way for Avery Semler.
The London, Ohio, teen harvested not one, but two trophy bucks last November – the month she legally became old enough to drive in Ohio. A veteran hunter since age 6, Semler and her two older sisters acquired their outdoor skills from their father, Eric Semler, who is the Madison County Sheriff’s Office’s chief deputy.

Disease Surveillance Area in north-central Ohio likely to expand into Allen County

Proposed modifications to rules governing the area of north-central Ohio where chronic wasting disease (CWD) is prevalent are “process oriented,” according to Mike Reynolds, administrator of wildlife management for the Ohio Division of Wildlife.
Four proposed rule modifications will allow the division to more easily add territory to the current Disease Surveillance Area (DSA) and simplify life for hunters who kill deer there, Reynolds added.

Fracking bids go to two firms to drill on Ohio state lands

There may soon be oil and gas fracking in one state park and two state wildlife areas following action by a special Ohio commission in late February.
The state Oil and Gas Land Management Commission voted to grant mineral leases to Encino Energy Partners for three parcels of land in Valley Run Wildlife Area and one parcel in Zepernick Wildlife Area. Leases also went to Infinity Natural Resources Ohio for two parcels in Salt Fork State Park. Both companies submitted “highest and best” bids for the leases, as state law requires.

Kayakers flocking to what is normally a dry desert region in California’s Death Valley National Park

Who would think there would be boating in California’s Death Valley National Park?
The park is the largest national park in the continental U.S. and encompasses a spot called Badwater Basin, a lonely outpost which is 282 feet below sea level – one of the lowest places in the world. It is also one of the driest places in North America. Badwater’s annual two inches of rainfall generally evaporates before it hits the ground.

More CWD positives detected in Ohio, one outside of Disease Surveillance Area

There’s more bad news about chronic wasting disease (CWD) in Ohio, Mike Reynolds told state wildlife council members in January. Reynolds is administrator of wildlife management for the Ohio Division of Wildlife.
Based on current testing efforts, CWD is spreading within the Disease Surveillance Area (DSA) that encompasses all of Hardin, Marion, and Wyandot counties in the north-central part of the state, but also outside of the DSA.

Ohio DNR adds 844 acres of public land in Coshocton County

In an attempt to prevent American Electric Power (AEP) from selling off 844 acres of previously strip-mined land in Coshocton County to private developers, the Ohio Division of Wildlife (DOW) recently bought the acreage for $1.8 million, according to John Sambuco, the division’s federal aid lands coordinator.
“AEP is in the process of divesting most of their past power generation land. If we do not act now, those lands will be sold off to private interests, removing them from public recreation,” he said.

Ohio’s deer gun season results in few incidents, no fatalities in ’23

The recent deer-gun season that ran Nov. 27 to Dec. 3 saw a handful of property damage accidents and only one personal injury accident – making it one of the safest seasons in recent years.
“That’s not many (accidents) compared to the number of hunters (about 400,000) in the field,” said Kandy Klosterman, law enforcement administrator for the DOW.
