Pennsylvania hunting family is grappling with grief, tinged with pride after a tragic death

Months before his untimely death, Paul Berger and his two adult children each completed a triple crown – harvesting turkeys, white-tailed deer and black bears in the span of the 2021-22 license year.
For the Westmoreland County family that had hunted together since Alyssa, 34, and Tyler, 32, were young kids, the “triple triple crown” was an extraordinary feat. It took on even more meaning after Paul’s tragic passing at 63 in a trapping-related accident along Loyalhanna Creek Dec. 27.

Future of Lake Erie North East Marina in Pennsylvania uncertain

While the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission scrambles to get North East Marina on Lake Erie open for boating, the long-term future of the facility, in North East, is far from certain.
Strict new permitting requirements for dredging the marina channel and major infrastructure problems – from deteriorating break walls to a non-functioning electrical system – have state officials assessing the cost and benefit of keeping the marina afloat, according to Fish & Boat Commission spokesman Mike Parker.

Lake Wilma in Greene County, Pa. temporarily closed to fishing

Trout season has been canceled at Lake Wilma this spring, and the popular impoundment in Greene County is expected to remain off-limits to all fishing for the next couple of months.
CNX Resources, which owns the lake, made the closure known just two weeks before the opening day of trout season April 1 and a week before Mentored Youth Trout Day.
Communicating through the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission, which manages Wilma’s fishery, CNX cited ongoing natural gas operations for the need to shut down angling, and indicated it will reopen the lake, perhaps in late May.

Eagles feast on carp after fish die-off on Pennsylvania’s Lake Octoraro

A carp die-off occurred on Lake Octoraro, which straddles Lancaster and Chester counties in Pennsylvania, providing a bountiful repast for eagles and other birds of prey.
Wildlife photographer Dr. Steve Berkowitz, an equine veterinarian, lives near the lake and headed there in early March with camera in hand, after he was tipped to the phenomenon by a friend.

Elk visionary Rawley Cogan named Pennsylvania Outdoor News’ Person of the Year

Rawley Cogan’s first assignment with the Pennsylvania Game Commission, in 1982, was to help research why the state’s elk population was failing to thrive.
For a 23-year-old wildlife technician, fresh out of Slippery Rock University, it was a unique opportunity and a daunting challenge.
Although he couldn’t have known it then, that early work would become the genesis of his lifelong fascination with elk and the big country in which they live.

Is there a genetic link to grouse behavior? Why Pennsylvania researchers are seeking the answer

Cory Dise acquired an unexpected buddy on a deer-hunt a couple of years ago when a ruffed grouse followed him into a treestand  – and refused to leave.
Dise, 49, of Whitehall, Lehigh County, encountered the bold little bird as he was walking with his father through a Bradford County field on his way to his favorite hunting spot in November 2021.
