Pennsylvania’s new online doe tag sales system bombs on launch day

The rollout of Pennsylvania’s online antlerless deer permit sales got off to a chaotic start June 26, with hunters waiting hours to make their purchases either virtually or at issuing agents across the state.
It was the first time the Pennsylvania Game Commission made doe tags available with general licenses – a change that was intended to streamline the process but which backfired as huge numbers of hunters tried to access the system at the same time early Monday morning.

Pittsburgh stream turns red; not due to mine drainage

Nine Mile Run looked like tomato soup in early June, the result of a municipal drinking water pipe that ruptured in a nearby neighborhood.
The incident, which occurred June 4 during a prolonged dry weather spell, sent opaque, orangey-red water rushing over the run’s boulder clusters and rocks as it made its way to the Monongahela River. Cyclists, hikers and other visitors to Frick Park snapped cellphone images, took to social media and contacted the Nine Mile Run watershed group, UpstreamPittsburgh, to express alarm.

Person admits to killing Pennsylvania bald eagle, charges expected

An individual is expected to face charges for the alleged killing of a bald eagle in Westmoreland County, Pa., in early May.
The Pennsylvania Game Commission would not release the name of the suspect until he or she is charged, but state game warden Seth Mesoras confirmed that the person “came forward and confessed everything” a few days after the shooting occurred. News of the crime posted to Operation Game Thief and other social media took off and likely pressured the suspect to come forward, Mesoras said.

Bear that attacked young children in Pennsylvania caught and euthanized

A bear that attacked and tried to carry off a toddler in Luzerne County was captured and euthanized less than a week after the May 22 incident, according to the Pennsylvania Game Commission.
The 14-month-old’s sibling, age 5, also was attacked as the children played in the front yard and driveway of their Wright Township home, the commission said. The children suffered non-life-threatening injuries, including bites and scratches, and were treated and released at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Traditional bass opener lacks excitement after removal of closed season in Pennsylvania

Until 20 years ago, opening day of bass season was a big deal at Cross Creek Lake, a Big Bass Program impoundment in Washington County, Pa.
Anglers would arrive the second Saturday in June eager to target trophy-size largemouths after a two-month moratorium during the spawn.
“Opening day of bass was almost like opening day of trout,” recalled Mike Milvet, owner of Cross Creek Bait & Tackle in Avella.

Sizzling hot April days trigger fish kill at Lake Marburg in Pennsylvania

A spate of summer-like weather triggered a recent fish die-off at Lake Marburg in Codorus State Park, York County.
Although it isn’t unusual for fish to succumb to springtime spawning stress, a sudden spike in water temperatures made this year’s loss of white perch and gizzard shad “more intense,” according to park educator Renae Weidner.

Centre County women win Pennsylvania’s Yellow Creek trout tournament

Lee Lazar, of Centre County, took up fly fishing at age 58, and in the six years since has made up for lost time.
Although she comes from a fly-rodding family, Lazar had never tried angling of any kind. But after retiring, the former business owner signed up for a course at Ohiopyle State Park. She soon found herself hooked, especially on targeting wild trout with dry flies.
