Traditional bass opener lacks excitement after removal of closed season in Pennsylvania

Based on scientific data and input from anglers, the decision was made to replace the closed season on bass with catch-and-release, and to compensate for an expected boost in mortality by raising the size minimum and lowering the creel limit fall and winter. (Photo courtesy Florida Fish & Game)

Until 20 years ago, opening day of bass season was a big deal at Cross Creek Lake, a Big Bass Program impoundment in Washington County, Pa.
Anglers would arrive the second Saturday in June eager to target trophy-size largemouths after a two-month moratorium during the spawn.
“Opening day of bass was almost like opening day of trout,” recalled Mike Milvet, owner of Cross Creek Bait & Tackle in Avella.
