Kayakers help catch alligator from Pennsylvania river after long search

Wildlife watchers have welcomed a bunch of species to the Kiskiminetas River in Armstrong County, Pa., as it rebounds from industrial pollution.
But a 4-foot alligator? Uh, no. Yet kayakers on a recent Saturday afternoon sojourn say that’s exactly what they encountered, and they snapped a photo as proof.
“We were floating down the river and a group of eight ahead us yelled “Alligator!” recalled Jim Cibik, of Kiski Township, who was with his wife, Joli, and two friends and their kids. “I thought they were joking at first, but when we got to that spot, there it was, sunning itself on some rocks.”

Many Pennsylvania hunters still are waiting for licenses

It felt like hurry up and wait for Pennsylvania hunters whose licenses and antlerless deer tags purchased online in late June hadn’t arrived in the mail by mid-July.
Many who had rushed to buy when licenses first went on sale were still waiting for paper copies more than three weeks later. Some orders were only partially filled. The Pennsylvania Game Commission was fielding calls about the issue from “many” hunters, said agency spokesman Travis Lau.

U.S. grand jury indicts Pennsylvania man, father of NFL player, for bald eagle killing

A western Pennsylvania man has been indicted by a federal grand jury for the alleged killing of a bald eagle in Mount Pleasant Township, Washington County, in early May.
Rodney Thomas, 50, of Canonsburg, fatally shot the mature eagle with an air rifle, in violation of the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, according to the one-count indictment, which was announced by the U.S. Attorney’s office in Pittsburgh, July 18. Thomas has been identified as the father of Indianapolis Colts safety Rodney Thomas II, 25, records show.

Pennsylvania’s Linda Lou Steiner, a writer, editor, and artist, adds to career as outdoor educator

Although she retired as a popular outdoors columnist, Linda Lou Steiner, of Venango County, Pa., wasted little time embarking on other projects, including one that puts the range of her talents on display.
Steiner wrote and illustrated The Eastern Wildlife Coloring Book to make learning about animals in Pennsylvania’s woods and waters engaging and fun.

Pennsylvania’s doe license sales going smoother after opening rush

Lehigh Valley native Earl Hower, now of Leesburg, Virginia, set his cellphone alarm for 8 a.m. hoping to be among the first in line when Pennsylvania’s nonresident antlerless deer permits went on sale July 10.
“At 8:00:23 (23 seconds) I was number 3,954 in the queue,” said Hower, who, with Wildlife Management Unit 2G clearly sold out, settled for a doe tag in unit 5C. “I bought at 8:48.”
Although it made him late for his morning commute, the experience “wasn’t too painful,” he said, “unlike for the several thousands during the opener.”

Fish reefs to be installed soon in Pennsylvania’s Monongahela River

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will begin this month to install 73 fish reefs in the Monongahela River in southwestern Pennsylvania as part of a $1.23 billion overhaul of the navigational lock and dam system to better accommodate barge traffic.
Installation of the rock reefs is designed to compensate for the loss of 46 acres of prime fish habitat that will result from the removal of outmoded lock and dam number 3 in Elizabeth next year, according to Stephen Frost, the Corps’ manager of the entire Mon project.

Bears are frequenting ‘The Burg’ in Pennsylvania again this spring

Marisa Greubter got an unexpected eyeful in late June when she went to let out the dogs in her suburban Pittsburgh yard and saw a black bear standing on its hind legs eating at her birdfeeder.
“I have a biology degree so I thought it was kind of cool,” the Ross Township resident told WTAE-TV news. “But I really don’t want him hanging around because I don’t want to have to worry about it. Everyone has kids and dogs. My own dogs are little.”
