Lampricide treatments critical in Pennsylvania’s Erie streams as efforts continue to kill off invasive predator in Great Lakes

Efforts to kill sea lamprey larvae in Conneaut Creek in Pennsylvania were conducted in late April at the start of a six-month-long lampricide program slated for the entire Great Lakes.
Streams are being treated with chemical compounds that are selectively toxic to lampreys but pose “no unreasonable risk to the general human population or the environment,” according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Health Canada Pest Management Regulatory Agency.
The program, which is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, began more than 50 years ago. Streams are treated every three to five years to kill multiple year classes.

Pennsylvania grandpa relishes mentoring experiences

Nothing brings Rob Papesch more joy than when one of his grandsons bags a big buck.
In the 14 years since he retired from an industrial sales job, Papesch, 74, of Waterford, Erie County, Pa., has mentored his daughters’ three kids, starting when they were just 7, and they’ve been hunting ever since.
“Mentoring is the best possible thing you can do,” said Papesch.

Presque Isle Bay perch barely misses Pennsylvania record

A Lawrence County man appears to have tied the Pennsylvania yellow perch record, but won’t get to share the glory – not officially, anyway.
Chuck Main, of Ellwood City, boated a 3.02-pound perch on Presque Isle Bay April 7, which was on par with the 2.98 pound record-setter Kirk Rudzinski, of Erie, caught on a shiner from Lake Erie in 2021.

Pennsylvania Game Commission’s building undergoing big expansion, renovation

The Pennsylvania Game Commission is expanding its headquarters here in a $14 million project designed to accommodate a growing staff, enhance operations and improve facilities for law enforcement.
Work is underway on a new $1.3 million addition to the agency’s warden training school, which will include weights and other standard fitness equipment, an armory for firearms maintenance, and storage space, with occupancy slated for late June. It will augment an existing basketball-size, multipurpose gym.

Park in southwestern Pennsylvania contains bison that dates back nearly a century

Although wild bison were gone from Pennsylvania by 1801, the giant mammals have existed in a public park near here for almost 100 years.
A herd of 11 — counting two calves born in March — lives on an 11-acre preserve owned by Allegheny County in South Park Township. Their ancestors were brought to the area in 1927 by county commissioners, who purchased 36 head from the Harry Drexler farm in Schnecksville, Lehigh County, with plans to stock half in South Park and half in North Park.
