Park in southwestern Pennsylvania contains bison that dates back nearly a century

Although wild bison were gone from Pennsylvania by 1801, the giant mammals have existed in a public park near here for almost 100 years.
A herd of 11 — counting two calves born in March — lives on an 11-acre preserve owned by Allegheny County in South Park Township. Their ancestors were brought to the area in 1927 by county commissioners, who purchased 36 head from the Harry Drexler farm in Schnecksville, Lehigh County, with plans to stock half in South Park and half in North Park.
