Pennsylvania fly-fishers compete in world event

Competing in a world fly-fishing championship in the Czech Republic was a homecoming of sorts for Roman Matusinsky, of Coplay, Lehigh County, Pa.
Although he has lived in the U.S. since 1998 and competes for his adopted land, Matusinsky, 55, was born and raised in the former Czechoslovakia, about six hours from where the ninth FIPS-Mouche Masters Fly Fishing Championship was recently held on the Vlatava River and two lakes.
“It was amazing, going back to my home country – really hard to describe,” said Matusinsky.

New Pennsylvania record white perch caught from Deleware River

A Berks County teen on the hunt for big Delaware River striped bass wound up with an historic bonus.
Christopher Barrett, 19, of Mohnton, Pa., boated a 2-pound, 1-ounce white perch April 14, 2024, to best the previous Pennsylvania record – also caught on the Delaware River, in 2008 – by 5 ounces, according to the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission, which made the feat official earlier this month.

Bass tournament season launches around Pennsylvania

Since a change in regulations in 2000, bass season in Pennsylvania has a softer opening than it once did, but for thousands of competition anglers, June 8 will be a special day because it also marks the start of tournament season.
“It’s like the kickoff for something we plan for all year,” said Mike Acord, a Lancaster County tackle shop owner and self-described tournament junkie. “Everyone’s fired up and ready to roll.”

Still no arrests in case of embedded fishhooks found in dog treats planted on Pennsylvania game land

A disturbing incident involving dog treats embedded with fishhooks on a state game land in Lehigh County remained under investigation nearly a month after they had been discovered.
At least a dozen booby-trapped treats were found by hikers May 5 on the Appalachian Trail in State Game Land 217 in Washington Township. They were scattered in a popular spot between state Route 873 and the George W. Outerbridge Shelter in an area that connects to the Lehigh Gap Nature Center trail system via the Woodpecker Trail.

Pennsylvania Game Commission’s chief of hunter education and outreach enthusiastic in face of changing hunting dynamics

Courtney Colley considers herself a bit of a late-comer to hunting.
Although she enjoyed going afield with her father when she was a kid, she was ambivalent, she said, “about pulling the trigger.” Pursuing archery at 15 helped her to make up her mind and led to a passion for bowhunting deer.

New Pennsylvania Game Commission leader, Stephen Smith, reaffirms agency’s direction

Stephen Smith, the new executive director of the Pennsylvania Game Commission, was an attorney in private practice when Pennsylvania’s so-called deer wars inspired him to rethink his career.
As an avid hunter – and with an undergraduate degree in political science – Smith felt deeply affected by the agency’s radical new deer management plan and wanted to play a part in advocating and defending what it represented – a science-based approach to wildlife management.

Discarded fishing line often proves fatal for birds

Pennsylvania Game Warden Mike Yeck gets about a dozen calls a year regarding waterfowl with fishing line entangling their feet.
Sometimes it’s multiple calls about the same bird.
“It’s usually geese more than ducks, probably because there are more of them where I patrol,” said Yeck, whose territory in Beaver County includes the Ohio and Beaver rivers and a few lakes stocked with trout in county parks.

Army Corps of Engineers to remove dam in Monongahela River near Pittsburgh this July

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will set off its own fireworks in July when it begins demolishing an antiquated dam on the Monongahela River near Pittsburgh, but they’ll happen underwater and there won’t be much to see.
Although the 650-foot-wide Elizabeth dam will be blasted with explosives, all that will be visible from land is a puff of smoke, according to the Corps’ project manager Stephen Frost, who said the event “will be pretty anticlimactic.”
Demolition of the dam will occur in stages and is the final phase in a $1.23 billion modernization of the lower Mon’s navigational system that began 30 years ago.
