New wildlife-viewing platform open on Haldeman Island in Pennsylvania’s Dauphin County; not all happy with changes

A ribbon-cutting will be held this summer for a wildlife-viewing platform now open to the public on Haldeman Island on the Susquehanna River in Dauphin County.
The Pennsylvania Game Commission project, which was completed last year on the southern edge of a 360-acre waterfowl propagation area, provides birders, photographers, and other visitors with new opportunities to watch waterfowl and marsh and shore birds.

Feds provide grants to cap wells in Pennsylvania’s Allegheny National Forest

Dozens of abandoned and orphaned oil and gas wells in the Allegheny National Forest have been earmarked for plugging, remediation and reclamation this year through a federal bipartisan initiative administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior.
Pennsylvania will receive funding to cap 37 wells in the forest – known as the ANF – as part of a multi-year $250 million program launched in 2022 to clean up thousands of defunct sites on federal public lands in 24 states.

Pennsylvania bear mauling victim is recovering

A Butler County, Pa., woman feels lucky to be alive, having survived a mauling by a black bear on the deck of her Butler Township home March 5 in an encounter she calls “terrifying.”
Lee Ann Galante, 55, was attacked by a sow at around 8:30 p.m. soon after she let her 8-pound Pomeranian, Smokie, into the backyard for a break. It began with Smokie barking at a bird feeder at the side of the house and a “terrible commotion” that Galante presumed involved a deer.

Pennsylvania’s ATV trail connector extension gets mixed reviews

The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources will continue to operate a controversial ATV Regional Trail Connector in state forests in the Northern Tier at least through the 2025 riding season, expanding a pilot program that ended last year.
While it is welcome news to thousands of ATV enthusiasts who have purchased passes to use the trail connector, the program gets a thumbs-down from environmentalists who say it poses a threat to the health and peaceful ambiance of the forests.

Alligator that survived Pennsylvania winter one of 70 animals killed during fire at rescue facility

An alligator believed to have survived a Pennsylvania winter in the wild has perished in a fire at a suburban sanctuary here.
Neo was one of more than 70 gators, turtles, salamanders, tarantulas and other animals that died in the Feb. 26 blaze at the non-profit Nate’s Reptile Rescue in South Park, which Allegheny County police say housed about 100 exotics. No cause had been announced by the county fire marshal as of March 3.

Could Kiskiminetas River gator have survived even mild Pa. winter?

If only alligators could talk.
It might solve the mystery of how a reptile presumed to be Neo – a juvenile that went missing in Westmoreland County, Pa., last summer – has spent the past seven months in the wild. If it is Neo, the young gator reappeared, a little worse for wear, near the Kiskiminetas River in Westmoreland County in early February.
