New York’s Envirothons challenge students, test their environmental knowledge
On a wet, early May morning, over 100 students from 14 different schools in and around Warren County gathered at the grounds of the county fish hatchery for a competition like none other. In fact, it was the 30th anniversary of the event.
Broken into teams, with some schools having multiple groups, they made their way around the hatchery grounds as they took part in competition that included tree and wildlife identification, soil types and even aquatics.

New York Crossbow Coalition President, Rick McDermott, dies in vehicle accident
Rick McDermott, founder and president of the New York Crossbow Coalition, died unexpectedly on June 10 as the result of an automobile accident. He was 66. His wife, Annemarie, 64 also perished in the accident, which occurred on State Route 104 in the town of Albion, according the Oswego County Sheriff’s Department.

New York sporting bills quiet as 11th hour loomed
It appears that New York’s sporting community will see neither favorable or unfavorable legislation passed during this year’s legislative session, unless it took place at the eleventh hour.
At press time, with just hours left in the 2023 legislative session that concluded on June 8, bills that could’ve created a lead ammunition ban, put an end to coyote hunting contests, create a 10-day waiting period to purchase a firearm and expand crossbow hunting opportunities were not acted upon.

A record by a beard hair (or feather)? The story of a gobbler to remember
Every once in a while a turkey hunt goes exactly as you want it to. That’s what happened on May 2, the morning I bagged what is perhaps my best spring gobbler to date.
The hunt took place in a grassy clearing on the side of a mountain near my home in the southeastern Adirondacks. This location, which is in Warren County, has been a consistent mature gobbler producer over the years and some scouting just ahead of the season revealed that it might be again.

George Gedney, promoter of New York’s youth hunting and shooting sports, presented with M. Paul Keesler Award
In 2017, the New York State High School Clay Target league was looking to expand beyond its start-up efforts in the central New York and the 1000 Islands regions. That year, the league found willing participants in schools in the northeastern part of the state and the expansion since that time has been nothing short of exceptional.
While there’s been a lot of hands in the fire to make it all happen, there is one person that many agree has led the charge a little harder, helping to make the NYSHSCL the success it currently is. That person is Queensbury (Warren County) resident George Gedney, who was recently honored by the New York State Outdoor Writers Association at the group’s spring conference, held in Corning (Steuben County). Gedney is the 2023 recipient of NYSOWA’s M. Paul Keesler New York Outdoor Citizen Award.
