More gun laws, crossbows highlight legislative hearings in New York

With the New York legislative session now underway for well over a month, the attention of the sporting community once again turns to Albany.
As always, several bills pertaining to hunting, fishing and trapping – both pro and con – have been brought to the table. Some are making their way into committee while others, as of press time, are one-house bills.
What follows is a sample of current bills of sporting interest at this time.

Although I sort-of own a snowmobile, I wouldn’t consider myself a snowmobiler. But I used to be, sort-of.
One of the few luxuries my hard-working father ever afforded himself was a snowmobile. Looking back, it was a family investment as growing up, my siblings, cousins and I spent countless hours taking turns making loops on my dad and uncle’s snowmobiles around the very property where I make my home today.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul proposes budget, announces bond act funding

Late January saw a number of announcements pertaining to outdoor-related funding coming from Gov. Kathy Hochul’s office.

Four new appointments announced to board that advises on sporting expenditures in New York

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation recently announced the appointments of four new members to the Conservation Fund Advisory  Board (CFAB).
CFAB is a statutorily appointed board that makes recommendations to state agencies on plans, policies, and programs impacting fish and wildlife. Members are volunteers, appointed by the governor and NYS Legislature.

New York gun show promoter, Sandy Ackerman, retires (sort-of)

When the Syracuse Gun Show takes place in April, there will be a new person calling the shots. But for those familiar with the New York State Arms Collectors Association Inc., it won’t be an unfamiliar face.
After more that 40 years with the NYSACA, and nearly two decades of promoting large-scale gun shows in Albany and Syracuse, Sandy Ackerman is retiring as show promoter and board member of the organization. She, and the group’s board members, have also decided to fold the organization. The show, or shows, however will go on.

I’ve been an NRA member for most of my adult life. A winter home project (spanning a few winters now) of organizing my book and magazine library has resulted in the rediscovery of some older NRA publications like American Hunter and American Rifleman.
A quick glance through some of these from the 1980s and 1990s (and even older) reflects a much different NRA than the organization that has found itself, fairly or not, in AG James’ crosshairs.
