There’s been some hope coming down the pike lately for New York gun owners, mostly because of two recent developments at the national level. First is the Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, introduced into Congress last month that would regulate the carry or possession of concealed firearms across state lines.
And most recently is President Trump’s order to the attorney general to assess a number of regulations and policies the Biden administration imposed on firearms. That all sounds like good news, but then again, we live in New York.

On Wednesday, Feb. 5, the New York Sportsmen’s Advisory Council and Congressional Sportsman’s Foundation hosted their annual breakfast, an event that pairs members of the state legislature with numerous stakeholders in the outdoor community.
Over two dozen members of the State Senate and Assembly attended the breakfast, which was held at the Empire State Plaza and Capitol, in Albany.

Brothers Eric and Leigh Gibson, along with fellow bandmate Mike Barber, have certainly earned any notoriety they have gained and have become icons in the Bluegrass music industry. Dan Ladd: Much to learn at a New York State Safe Boating Course

Effective this year, New York residents who operate a motorized boat in New York State are required to take a safe boating course and earn a safe boating certificate. This applies to anyone who operates any motorized watercraft, including small boats and canoes powered by electric trolling motors.
This requirement is the result of Brianna’s Law, passed in 2019 in the name of an 11-year-old girl killed in a boating accident in 2005.

Dan Ladd: Is more January hunting in the works in New York?

Among the interesting topics readers have been discussing and debating as of late is one that revolves around any potential possibility that the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation might expand deer hunting in the Southern Zone into January.
As we reported, on more than one occasion, DEC was encouraging hunters to harvest antlerless deer ahead of, and during the most recent deer seasons, in both zones, actually. We’ll see how those numbers pan out when harvest statistics are released this spring and if some of DEC’s antlerless harvest goals were realized.

New York to get $32 million in federal conservation funds

New York is poised to receive nearly $32 million in federal conservation funds for the Fiscal Year 2025. The funding is among $1.3 billion in apportionments nationwide though the Wildlife Restoration Act, better known as Pittman-Robertson and Dingell-Johnson funds thanks to  excise taxes paid by sportsmen.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently announced the apportionments to support states, commonwealths and territories in its efforts to fund conservation and connect people with nature.

Dan Ladd: Might there be a normal ice fishing season in New York?

I used to really be into winter. In fact, as soon as deer season was over, I would be breaking out the ice fishing gear, tuning up the cross-country skis and watching the weather forecast hoping for the snow and cold, all the while keeping in touch with my fishing and skiing partners as we awaited the arrival of winter conditions.
There hasn’t been too much of that in recent years, at least in my neck of the woods here in the Southeastern Adirondacks. However, there is snow in parts of New York, and as we’ve previously reported, some ice as well.
