New research examines the cost of reproduction for wild turkey hens

Turkey hens pay the price for keeping the ecology ball rolling, so to speak.
A recently published study on female wild turkeys shows how different stages of reproduction influence the survival of hens and what that means for the long-term health of turkey populations. One of the most interesting findings from the study is that hen survival rates appear relatively strong, even in areas where productivity has declined.

Ralph Loos: We’re building something solid – the second Michigan Outdoor News Turkey Photo Contest

Just a day or so after stepping into this role with Michigan Outdoor News, I was passed a note from Jon Gray, current president of the Michigan Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation.
Gray wondered if we wanted to continue a construction project he and my predecessor, Bill Parker, had built a sturdy foundation for last spring. During the 2025 spring season, Outdoor News and the Michigan NWTF partnered to launch something that could someday equal our Best Buck Photo Contest, which for years has been wildly popular with the state’s deer hunters.

Tom Venesky: Pennsylvania’s elk license bill enables secrecy, not transparency

Last year the Pennsylvania Game Commission took some positive steps toward improving the elk license drawing.

This year, a pair of bills proposed in the state House could impede the progress. A major concern among hunters has been the lack of transparency involved with the elk license drawing.

2025 Deer Camp Survey sheds some light on hunter success in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

Based on results from the Michigan DNR’s annual UP Deer Camp Survey, deer hunting success during the 2025 firearms season was identical to the year before – and on par with average results over the years the survey has been conducted.
In both the 2024 and 2025 hunts, 24% of hunters bagged a buck both years and saw an average of 2.7 deer per hunter day each year. The long-term average for the number of deer seen per hunter day is 2.9.

Total Allowable Catch decided for Lake Erie’s walleye, perch

On March 27 at the end of this year’s Great Lakes Fishery Commission’s Lake Erie Committee meetings, the 2026 walleye and yellow perch Total Allowable Catch (TAC) quotas were shared.
As has been pointed out over the years, the TAC, whether set by numbers or weight, is not a target or goal to catch but a scientifically recommended cap on the level that can be safely harvested in a season.
