Christine Thomas: Wildlife women catch bonnethead sharks in Georgia

Readers learned in the last issue that my Ducks Unlimited Conservation Programs Committee met at Jekyll Island, Georgia, for a field trip. When the meetings and the field trip were over, some of us stayed on an extra day to fish. When planning this, we did not anticipate a cold snap in Georgia that would take temperatures into the low 40s.

Michigan one buck limit up for vote: ‘We’re not balancing our harvest’

DNR officials have proposed a “one buck rule” to restrict every hunter in Michigan to a single antlered deer per season statewide. The goal, as stated, is to better balance the statewide harvest and drive down deer numbers.
“It’s no secret we have been trying to promote, especially in the Lower Peninsula, an increase in our antlerless harvest,” Chad Stewart, a DNR deer program manager, told Michigan Outdoor News. “Really, what we’re striving for is a more balanced harvest.”

Dean Bortz: Why, or when, do our Wisconsin deer hunters squeeze the trigger?

UW-Madison graduate Meghan Henry conducted a survey on how hunters make a decision on when to take a good shot opportunity at a buck during the Wisconsin gun deer season in 2022 and 2023. Much of the information from her study was recently reviewed by the National Deer Association, with a summary listed on this page.

Steve Carney: Early spring conditions on Lake Traverse

April and May on western Minnesota’s Lake Traverse is always a great option for multiple sportfish species well before the inland (May 9) fishing opener.
I have been fishing this fine lake for 35-plus years, and it has undergone many changes, some good, some not so good. I just returned from my first spring day trip there with mixed results.

Minnesota conservation officer helps elderly woman deter nuisance black bear

A northern Minnesota conservation officer helped an elderly woman scare off a nuisance bear after it returned to her yard a day after his initial visit.
Ben Huener, who patrols the Baudette area, responded April 8 after the woman, who lives alone, reported bear tracks and damage around her home. She found bent bird feeders, torn food, and paw prints on her deck and was worried.
