Steve Carney: Late spring in Minnesota means it’s time to catch panfish

I love early June, when fishing on lakes across Minnesota is going strong, especially for panfish.
It looks like crappies missed their spawn window; most are still hanging onto their eggs. The up-and-down temperatures of May just weren’t the right scenario for a solid slab spawn. On the other hand, panfish right now are moving to their early-summer locations and are active.

Efforts to restore the prairie at Iowa’s Green Valley State Park already bearing fruit

A young male turkey is slowly walking to the safety of a pile of downed cedar trees, near the entrance road to Green Valley State Park’s campground in Iowa. The tree piles located around the park are part of a project reclaiming the hillsides for prairie, offering important nesting for grassland birds and protecting the lake from sediment erosion.
“These transition periods can be a little visually messy, but when the prairie is back on the land and visitors can see the lake, it will be pretty neat,” said Chad Paup, wildlife biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) nearby Grand River Unit.

Reward offered as Wisconsin DNR seeks information on illegal shooting of important bull elk

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) still needs the public’s help to gather information on the illegal killing of a bull elk in Jackson County.
The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation is offering a $5,000 reward, and the Wisconsin Buck and Bear Club is offering a $500 reward for information that leads to the successful prosecution of this incident.

Sea Gull Lake is located at the end of the Gunflint Trail in the heart of Minnesota’s canoe country. This 3,958-acre Cook County fishery, and its Canadian Shield-like setting, is well known for providing excellent lake trout and walleye fishing opportunities.

As of May 30, the interactive air quality map showed a strip of orange moving northwest to southeast across Wisconsin. Most of the state showed moderate air quality, as did all of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Eastern Iowa and northwestern Illinois also showed moderate air quality on the AirNow map.

A close look at the downward trend of available deer licenses for North Dakota gun hunters

The number of deer-hunting gun licenses in North Dakota is being cut again in 2025, continuing a downward trend that has spanned a decade.
The N.D. Game and Fish Department has allocated 42,300 deer gun licenses for the upcoming season – a reduction of 7,800 licenses from last year and a drop of more than 27,000 licenses compared with the year 2000. NDG&F officials say the reduction reflects ongoing challenges to the state’s deer population.
