Limit of one tag per hunter among changes to Michigan’s fall turkey season

If you were one of those few hunters who harvested more than one wild turkey during the fall season, well, store that in your memory bank. The Natural Resources commission has made some sweeping changes to fall turkey hunting regulations including limiting the harvest to one bird.
The changes, which were requested by the Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Division, were adopted by a unanimous vote of the NRC at its May meeting in Lansing.

Midges and mayflies may be bothersome, but both are important fish food on Lake Erie

Each spring and summer, those living or visiting the Lake Erie shoreline may need to deal with large numbers of annoying “bugs,” depending upon the time of year.
When aquatic insects exit the lake, it is often erroneously called a “hatch,” when in fact, it is properly defined as an “emergence.” The hatch occurs when a larva or naiad first exits its egg. On the lake itself, the insects in question are rarely mosquitoes, which require calmer water than Lake Erie normally provides.

Izaak Walton League of America: More funding should be pumped into nation’s Farm Bill

The Izaak Walton League of America (IWLA) is concerned about the new Farm Bill. For 100 years, the league has been a defender of this country’s soil, air, woods, water, and wildlife. Its members, who call themselves “IKEs” believe it is important that conservation work be well funded.
The Farm Bill is a broad piece of legislation that directs food and agriculture policy in our country. It can also be considered a clean water, public health, and climate resiliency bill. Each Farm Bill lasts for five years.

Lake Erie Birding Trail guidebook updated, enhanced

A new, more user-friendly Lake Erie Birding Trail Guidebook is now available, reflecting an expanded and enhanced trail stretching 312 miles along the lake’s Ohio shoreline, according to Jamey Emmert, avian educator with the Ohio Division of Wildlife.
Emmert, a self-professed “bird nerd,” is the guide’s primary author. Ohio Sea Grant funded the design and printing.

Bass fishing in the Olympics? Movement gets a boost from Kevin VanDam

Bass fishing in the Olympics? That possibility may not be far off nor far-fetched.
USA Angling – the organization that oversees all U.S. competitive fishing – has been lobbying for more than 10 years to get fishing recognized as an Olympic sport. Those efforts got a huge boost with the endorsement of Kalamazoo, Mich., native Kevin VanDam, one of the most recognized names in the bass fishing world.
