Minnesota Mixed Bag: DNR seeks applicants for Winnibigoshish, Rainy Lake input groups

The Minnesota DNR is seeking people with a range of perspectives and experiences, including local fishing guides, local anglers, anglers from across Minnesota, local businesses and resorts, and water-based businesses, to serve on two fisheries input groups – one for Lake Winnibigoshish and the other for Rainy Lake.

Minnesota turkey hunters set new harvest record in spring 2025

In the end, the more than 59,000 turkey hunters who went after gobblers this spring topped the harvest record that was set last year. They did that by taking about 16,880 turkeys as of Tuesday, June 3, according to the Minnesota DNR.
DNR Migratory Gamebird Consultant Nate Huck said Tuesday that it’s likely a few more harvested birds will be registered in coming days and weeks to ultimately reach the final harvest tally – somewhere in the 16,900s, which surpasses the 2024 spring season’s record of 16,714.

Pro Fishing Tip of the Week: Try bobber fishing 4 to 8 inches above bottom

An emerging pattern shows a good number of walleyes hugging tight to the bottom. When conventional presentations are not working, it’s time for a float and leech combination.
The majority of anglers bobber fish 12 to 18 inches above the bottom in hopes of success. While walleyes that are tight to the bottom can and will come up to feed, a presentation of 4 to 8 inches above the bottom can offer great results.

Minnesota’s Wayzata High School hosts annual fun shoot, building camaraderie with local first responders

At the annual Kids-and-Cops fun shoot, the Wayzata High School Clay Target team competed in a friendly competition alongside first responders on May 29 at the Plymouth Gun Club.
“They get to enjoy getting to know the youth, and they also enjoy breaking targets,” joked Randal Baker, the coach of the high school clay target team.
The goal of hosting the event is to help young student-athletes create relationships with law enforcement officers or firefighters who serve their community.

Foundation makes wetlands, stream accessible for all in Pennsylvania

Twenty-two cars and pickups nearly filled the parking lot at the Soaring Eagle Wetlands near Julian, Pa. The vehicles mainly belonged to anglers taking advantage of the access to a section of Bald Eagle Creek delineated as Keystone Select – and stocked with buckets full of big trout.
It should be no surprise that anglers flock to the state’s Keystone Stocked Trout Waters, because they provide excellent catch-and-release fishing for large trout. For three months out of the year, the biggest attraction at Soaring Eagle by far is the trout fishing.

Tom Venesky: Air rifles for big game in Pennsylvania lacks merit

Some hunters prefer to hunt deer with traditional bows or a muzzleloader because they like the challenge of hunting with a primitive weapon.
But there’s a big difference between a challenge and ethics. I don’t begrudge anyone who chooses to hunt with a recurve, for example, or even a muzzleloader. They are effective choices when used in the corresponding season. When it comes to the ethical choice, however, I’ve always believed that you use the tool that is most capable of a quick, clean, one-shot kill.
