Remains of hiker missing since Thanksgiving weekend found on New York’s Allen Mountain

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has confirmed the remains of missing hiker Leo DuFour were found off the Allen Mountain trail in Essex County, in the Adirondacks.

On the morning of Saturday, May 10, DEC received a report about remains found by a hiking party and deployed Forest Rangers, a DEC Division of Law Enforcement Bureau of Environmental Crimes Investigator, and New York State Police to the location. Recovery of the subject was coordinated with the New York State Police.

North Dakota hunter takes record-book moose with the help of local quilting club

When Christian Levitt, of Buffalo, N.D., drew a once-in-a-lifetime bull moose tag in 2022, he understood how special the opportunity was. Nearly 9,000 hunters had applied for a chance to hunt in the northwestern unit near Minot that year. Just 36 tags were issued.
Levitt, who lives about 250 miles from the hunting unit, faced a difficult task. Unfamiliar with the area and unsure where to begin scouting, he turned to a surprising source for help: a group of local women from a quilting club.

Trapping season changes appear to have minimal effect in Minnesota

After rolling out regulation changes for trapping bobcats, fishers, and otters this year, it’s been informative for the Minnesota DNR researchers behind the scenes to assess how the changes may have affected preliminary harvest.
As of Wednesday, April 30, DNR Wildlife Research Biologist John Erb said the preliminary harvest numbers he received totaled around 979 bobcats, 650 fishers, and 651 pine marten. Fishers are seeing the highest increase in harvest with a jump of about 18% over last year’s total.

Deer meeting in Wisconsin’s Waupaca County turns to talks about CWD concerns

While the Waupaca County’s County Deer Advisory Council (CDAC) met May 1 for three hours to make recommendations for the 2025 deer seasons, much of that time was spent discussing local cases of chronic wasting disease.
CDAC member Bob Leder, of Bear Creek, a retired large-animal veterinarian, opened the CWD discussion. Although the vast majority of CWD-positive deer have been reported in southwestern Wisconsin’s Iowa, Dane, Richland, and Sauk counties, the disease was reported for the first time last year in Chippewa, Pierce, Manitowoc, and Menominee counties.
