Long-term delegates on Conservation Congress challenged in Wisconsin’s Washburn, Bayfield county

A degree of political backlash or reprisal seems to have crept into the election of Washburn County Conservation Congress delegates during the April 14 spring hearings, with the focus apparently on long-serving delegate Joe Weiss.
The Conservation Congress, founded in 1937, is the only statutory body in Wisconsin where citizens elect delegates to advise the DNR and the Natural Resources Board on natural resource management. The election of delegates appeared to be what brought a record of 108 attendees to the Washburn County Conservation Congress’s spring hearing.

New York’s Lake Champlain lake trout holding their own as stocking ends after 2025

Are wild lake trout that have become more prevalent in New York’s Lake Champlain better able to escape predation by sea lamprey? Some anglers and fisheries experts think that is the case, and with lake trout stocking on Champlain coming to an end after this year, lamprey wound rates will be closely watched to see if it can be confirmed.
Charter Boat Captain Mick Maynard, who operates Lake Champlain Fishing Charters in Chazy, has fished Champlain for the better part of five decades, and said he has noticed fewer lamprey wounds on wild lakers than stocked fish.

Group seeks National Park status for Shawnee Forest in Illinois

A new effort is under way to re-designate the Shawnee National Forest as the “Shawnee National Park and Climate Preserve.”
Supporters say this change could bring big economic and environmental benefits to southern Illinois. Les Winkeler, a retired journalist and outdoor enthusiast from southern Illinois (and also a regular contributor to Illinois Outdoor News), is one of the leading voices behind the push to make the Shawnee National Forest a national park. He said the effort is not just about protecting nature, but about helping the region thrive.

Pymatuning Reservoir is the perfect place for adventure along the Pennsylvania, Ohio border

It is said that only the stupidest anglers reveal their secret hotspots to other fishermen. I wonder if that is equally true of outdoor writers who not only reveal a favorite fishing location, but also one of the best areas in the Keystone State to combine that activity with boating, camping and kayaking activities.
If so, then I’m as stupid as they come, because I am not hesitant to brag that the Pymatuning Reservoir, and the three Pennsylvania state campgrounds on the shores of the 17,000-acre impoundment, must be among the best areas in the state to enjoy the mishmash of those happenings.

I am 16 years old, and yes, that is my real last name. I am an exchange student from Denmark. Right now, I’m living in Muskegon, Mich., with my wonderful host family, Margie and Scott Hladki.
My host-dad, Scott, took me up deer hunting in Alpena, in November 2024. I’ve never shot a deer before, but l’ve always dreamed of it. This is my story!
