Two online aquatic animal dealers convicted of shipping invasive species to eight Wisconsin counties

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announced on Wednesday that two national online suppliers of aquatic animals have been convicted in multiple Wisconsin county circuit courts for ignoring warnings from the DNR and repeatedly shipping illegal invasive species to schools, residents and businesses.
In March and April 2025, the two companies based in North Carolina and Indiana, respectively, were each convicted of 20 citations with penalties related to the shipment of illegal invasive species to customers in eight Wisconsin counties.

Steve Carney: Advice on shore-fishing for crappies, and some Minnesota opener tips

Fishing from shore for crappies was standard practice for this fishing guide back when I was young. In those days, you could fish off of people’s docks and go most places without any hassles. Obviously, things have changed.
I’ve been shore-fishing the past two weeks with varied success. Some days, crappies are biting, and other days they are strangely absent. Here are some shore-fishing tips that have worked for me.

Minnesota Mixed Bag: Juvenile avoids boating disaster on Lake Miltona near Alexandria

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Department on May 4 issued a press release involving a boating incident and a juvenile operator.
According to the release, the sheriff’s office on May 3 at about 2 p.m. received a 911 call that a person had fallen out of a moving boat on Douglas County’s Lake Miltona and that the boat “was still going in circles.”

Minnesota’s spring turkey season on track for top-two finish in harvest

As of early May, it’s no surprise that the 2025 turkey harvest is still on course to likely break the top five rank for all-time harvest, coming in with around 13,220 birds so far this spring.
“If we didn’t have another registered turkey, which obviously won’t be the case, that would be good for the fourth-highest harvest, all time,” said Nate Huck, Minnesota DNR migratory game-bird consultant.

Minnesota waterfowl seasons set, with split shift in the southern zone

The Minnesota DNR has released the season framework for the 2025 migratory bird-hunting seasons, and it includes one notable change to the duck season in the state’s southern zone.
This year’s 60-day duck season in the southern zone will run from Sept. 27 through Oct. 5, will close for 12 days, and then will continue from Oct. 18 through Dec. 7. Last year, the split closure was five days, and the season ended Nov. 24.

Minnesota House OKs its budget for state environment

In a minutes-long meeting on Thursday, May 1, the Minnesota Senate Environment, Climate, and Legacy Committee moved policy bills previously pulled from omnibus bill S.F. 2077 to S.F. 2781, a bill that modifies environmental review reporting requirements.
The crossbow-for-all extension, elimination of the firearms deer-hunting shotgun zone, youth earning bear preference points, beaver consumption, trapping hours change, continuous bass season, and commercial harvest of burbot on Lake Superior are included in this new package.

Notes off a soiled cuff: A hunting story from Pennsylvania that tops them all

As you might imagine, I have heard a lot of hunting stories – this one tops them all:
Not long before dusk last Oct. 9, then 87-year-old Frank Jubara Sr. – a lifelong hunter and angler – shot a big doe with his crossbow on Lilly Mountain in Cambria County, Pa., not far from his home in Portage.

Commentary: Michigan House Bill 4073 would handcuff conservation officers

House Bill 4073 is a bad idea, which would have severe implications for Michigan’s natural resources.
The bill requires that conservation officers obtain search warrants to enter private lands. The bill’s sponsor justifies this draconian requirement with a statement that seems to make perfect sense: “…balance the responsibilities of our conservation officers with the privacy rights of our citizens to prevent abuses of power from individual bad actors, and really just to protect our private property rights.”
