The process has been a long one. John Hageman wrote an Ohio Outdoor News feature about sauger restoration back in 2012. Who knows if it was the first discussion in recent times, when Ohio Division of Wildlife officials pondered another attempt to restore sauger in Lake Erie. They must have faced tough questions with no easy answers.
Two of the questions the division faces today concern the state of Lake Erie and habitat.
Under new business at the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s recent quarterly meeting, Commissioner Bob Schwalm asked agency staff to examine the possibility of changing the mentored hunting program to allow mentored hunters under 7 years old to once again get their own harvest tags.
Under current regulations, mentored hunters under 7 can harvest a variety of big game using tags transferred to them by their adult mentor.

During a recent drive across Pennsylvania on Interstate 80, I noticed quite a few roadkills.
But they weren’t deer. Through a nearly 40-mile stretch of the interstate – from Danville to Loganton – I counted five dead turkeys along the road. Further west, from Snowshoe to Clearfield, I spotted three more along the interstate, for a total of eight.
