Confirmation of cougar kittens in Michigan creates quite a stir as the DNR seeks more answers

Photographs of a pair of cougar kittens confirmed to have been taken in Michigan’s western Upper Peninsula have created more questions than answers, but it has also created quite a stir in Ontonagon County and beyond.
The Michigan DNR announced on March 13 that it had confirmed a pair of cougar kits in Ontonagon County. The photographs were submitted by a local resident there who took the pictures on private property. The kits were seen and photographed without their mother.
“We’re taking it all in. Right now there are very few knowns. We’re hoping to get more pictures,” Brian Roell, the state’s large carnivore specialist.

Dan Ladd: Don’t procrastinate, take the required safe boating course in New York

In my February column, I wrote about my experience in setting up and taking a NYS Safe Boating Course earlier this year. Since the topic is of immediate and ongoing interest – and one that’s been discussed in the past five years – we’ll continue to cover it in the weeks and months ahead.
For now, with ice-out on the way and the April 1 trout opener looming, early season anglers are getting their boats ready for the open water. So the question has to be asked: if you operate a motorized boat, have you taken the now required NYS Safe Boating Course and obtained a safe boating certificate?

Mike Raykovicz: At long last, a bobcat caught on camera near New York/Pennsylvania border

When I moved to New York’s Southern Tier back in 1969, man had yet to land on the moon, turkeys were a rarity, and no one that I knew ever encountered a bear, much less a coyote. But, during the ensuing years all that changed.
Turkeys are hunted across the state and I hear coyotes howling just about every night as I’m leaving the woods during archery season. Bear sightings are fairly common, and we even had a mother with three cubs walk down the middle of our street a short while ago.
There is however one animal I’ve never seen, and that’s a bobcat.

Bob Vogel: Ohio is my favorite whitetail hunting destination, despite a tough 2024 season

As a lifelong resident of Michigan, I have hunted the Wolverine State for more than 40 years. I have been fortunate to chase whitetails across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. However, my favorite whitetail hunting destination is Ohio.
I first hunted the Buckeye State 10 years ago. On that initial trip, a friend invited me to hunt with his family on their property in Coshocton County. As usual, I had only a couple of days set aside for this muzzleloader hunt.

Wisconsin State Roundup: Bills introduced as possible sandhill crane hunting season gains steam

Legislation to create a sandhill crane hunting season in Wisconsin was introduced to the State Senate March 7 and the Assembly March 11.
The bills, 2025 Senate Bill 112 and 2025 Assembly Bill 117, are now in the Senate Committee on Financial Institutions and Sporting Heritage, chaired by Sen. Robert Stafsholt (R-New Richmond) from St. Croix County and the Assembly Committee on Sporting Heritage, chaired by Rep. Treig Pronschinske (R-Mondovi).
