Dan Ladd: Don’t procrastinate, take the required safe boating course in New York

The requirement to take the safe boating course in New York applies even to the simplest form of angler who operates an electronic trolling motor in a small fishing boat or canoe. If it’s motorized, you need the course and certificate. (File photo by Eric Morken)

In my February column, I wrote about my experience in setting up and taking a NYS Safe Boating Course earlier this year. Since the topic is of immediate and ongoing interest – and one that’s been discussed in the past five years – we’ll continue to cover it in the weeks and months ahead.
For now, with ice-out on the way and the April 1 trout opener looming, early season anglers are getting their boats ready for the open water. So the question has to be asked: if you operate a motorized boat, have you taken the now required NYS Safe Boating Course and obtained a safe boating certificate?
