Russ Mason: DOGE cuts impacting fish and wildlife management

There’s been plenty of recent attention paid to Elon Musk and the effects of his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Unsurprisingly, little has been said about impacts to natural resources conservation.
The exceptions have been personnel cuts to U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and National Park Service (NPS) programs that support outdoor recreation and wildfire management. Fish and wildlife conservation have barely entered the conversation, perhaps because much of the press, like most Americans, don’t really understand what’s at stake. After all, 85% of Americans don’t fish and 95% don’t hunt.

Bob Zink: Crossbows are not the equivalent to hunting with a gun

A few years ago, I wrote about the effects of crossbows on deer hunting. There are several points that arise, over and over.
Does the use of crossbows result in a greater harvest of deer and damage to the population? Short answer, the science says no. Some claim that crossbow hunters get all the good bucks before the gun season. Short answer, no (look at the hunter pics in Outdoor News). Crossbows have advantages, particularly the ability to cock the bow long before any deer comes into range. But if someone thinks crossbows are guns, then I know one thing: They have never hunted with a crossbow.

Sampling shows bass continue to thrive in Illinois harbors

A total of 305 smallmouth bass and 140 largemouth bass were collected by DNR in three Illinois harbors and the shoreline inside Calumet Harbor last spring, with evidence that overall bass populations continue to grow in size and in numbers.
The results of the DNR sampling compliment annual anglers surveys that show since 2015, the number of smallmouth bass caught and released has ranged from 3,840 to a peak of 16,604 in 2022. In 2023, an estimated 9,870 smallmouth bass and 3,490 largemouth bass were caught and released in Illinois waters of Lake Michigan.

Wisconsin’s new numbered deer units on emergency rule route

Northern Forest Zone and Central Forest Zone deer hunters in Wisconsin are poised to see new deer units this fall after the Natural Resources Board (NRB) passed a Department of Natural Resources (DNR) emergency rule recommendation to void the county units and – sort of – go back to numbered units.
One controversial part of the change is the emergency order that would put the new units in play this fall, followed by a permanent rule change to go into effect in 2026.

Notes off a soiled cuff: Feeding your pets raw food not a good idea

A few months ago, when I was preparing to write a story about a Penn State study showing household pet dogs were spreading antibiotic-resistant salmonella – a serious public health concern – one of the researchers made an off-hand comment I thought was surprising.
She said that one of the reasons they conducted the research was the growing trend of people feeding their dogs raw food. I had no idea that was even a thing.
