Steve Carney: For big bluegills, leave the live bait at home

Lately, bluegills in area lakes have been hitting fast and furiously, mostly in shallow water. The lakes I fish contain a variety of sizes of bluegills, but I’ve been targeting only the bigger ones.
My strategy is simple. I used artificial lures, such as small spoons, and no live bait.
Here’s why.

South Dakota limits number of Black Hills nonresident turkey tags

Turkey hunters venturing on an out-of-state trip for the spring season will face new challenges in South Dakota in 2025.
A recent policy shift capped the number of spring turkey-hunting licenses for nonresidents in the Black Hills. The move reduces the total number of licenses available from an unlimited pool to 2,225. Last year, the state issued 3,170 nonresident licenses under the unlimited system.

Tom Venesky: An unorthodox defense of invasive plants in Pennsylvania

Making the case in support of invasive plant species in Pennsylvania isn’t a popular one, but sometimes the benefits to wildlife are undeniable.
Some of my best small-game hunting hotspots are dominated by invasives. Thick, nasty tangles of multiflora rose and autumn olive are havens for rabbits, as are old fields overgrown with Johnsongrass and bush honeysuckle.

John Tertuliani: River fishing one last time before winter sets in is good for the soul

River reconnaissance is my idea of R and R. No actual recon is in order, not for the Scioto River in Ohio. Flowing close to home, I know it well. Come December, I want to be out in the water one last time. Winter is about to seize it until spring. I need to know if this is it.
Flowing water has always appealed to me. Standing in it for long periods has become a source of healing. Having the water to myself, me and the animals, a time for reflection.

Commentary: In Congress’ final days, wildlife, outdoor recreation legislation sent to president

Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, on Dec. 23, celebrated the advancement of two bills a week ago passed unanimously by the U.S. Senate following their passage by the House of Representatives earlier this year: the America’s Conservation Enhancement (ACE) Reauthorization Act and Expanding Public Lands Outdoor Recreation Experiences (EXPLORE) Act.

Outdoor Insights: Can Minnesota legislators remember what compromise means this upcoming session?

Hearing lots of chatter about a possible state budget deficit in a few years. The opposition and some media happily have declared that Democrats own any deficit due to their spending of the 2023 budget surplus. The budget that year didn’t get a single Republican vote, so yeah, for the foreseeable future, Dems should expect political fallout over lower forecasts.
But Republican lawmakers played a dangerous game during the 2022 legislative session when they walked away from a budget deal even though they controlled the state Senate 34-31.
