Backcountry Hunters & Anglers Report

Commentary: Backcountry Hunters and Anglers sounds alarm amid push to sell half a million public-land acres

Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, North America’s leading public lands advocacy group, announced May 12 that it’s sounding the alarm and mobilizing its nationwide grassroots network in response to a last-minute amendment to the U.S. House budget reconciliation bill that would authorize the sale of nearly 500,000 acres of public lands in Utah and Nevada.
Introduced without public input, conservation safeguards, or reinvestment in access or habitat, the amendment represents a sweeping assault on the future of America’s public lands.

Commentary: Boundary Waters advocates celebrate U.S. senator’s attempt to protect the wilderness

Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, Sportsmen for the Boundary Waters, and Minnesota Trout Unlimited on April 9 commended U.S. Sen. Tina Smith, a Minnesota Democrat, for introducing the Boundary Waters Wilderness Protection Act to permanently protect the Rainy River Watershed and Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness from the threat of sulfide-ore copper mining.
This legislation builds on years of advocacy by U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum, also a Minnesota Democrat, who has championed the Boundary Waters Wilderness Protection and Pollution Prevention Act with support from hunters and anglers.

Commentary: ‘Corner-crossing’ ruling a huge victory for public land owners

In a huge victory for public land owners, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers on March 18 applauds the ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit that affirmed the right to “corner-cross” to access public lands. The ruling marks a pivotal decision that cements the legality of public access to millions of acres of public lands in the West.

Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, on Dec. 23, celebrated the advancement of two bills a week ago passed unanimously by the U.S. Senate following their passage by the House of Representatives earlier this year: the America’s Conservation Enhancement (ACE) Reauthorization Act and Expanding Public Lands Outdoor Recreation Experiences (EXPLORE) Act.

Commentary: U.S. House bills would weaken, strip funding from Land and Water Conservation Fund

Backcountry Hunters & Anglers is strongly criticizing four bills in the U.S. House of Representatives that take aim at the Land and Water Conservation Fund and the Great American Outdoors Act, the bipartisan law that ensures continued LWCF funding.
Together, the four bills would hamstring the ability of public land-management agencies to strategically acquire areas of important fish and wildlife habitat and places key to public access.
