A famous grizzly bear viewed for decades by countless tourists, biologists and professional wildlife photographers in Grand Teton National Park is dead after being struck by a vehicle in western Wyoming
While the headlines get all the attention – “Pheasant Numbers are up 25%” – there’s so much more to the story and you don’t have to be a biologist or a hunter to understand the recipe for healthy upland game and pheasant populations. Weather and habitat.
Good nesting weather and spring grasslands help maintain and grow pheasant numbers. The right weather at the right time is preferred. Often that’s more of a wish than reality, while a winter with plenty of deep snow and cold can thin even the strongest numbers in North Dakota.

Peter Fiduccia, of Gilbertsville, in Otsego County, N.Y., is the “deer doctor” of New York State.

I recently spent an afternoon in a ground blind I set up last August. I was anticipating some deer-hunting action on this perfect late afternoon.
After an hour or so in the blind, I heard some sporadic rifle shots to my north. It didn’t sound like target practice, but rather someone probably hunting squirrels or rabbits. The sixth shot I heard came right over my ground blind, and I heard the leaves above me scatter.
