Some miss the old days, but changes for Minnesota’s Camp Ripley bowhunt mostly smooth sailing

Around this time, for the past 70 years, Camp Ripley in central Minnesota would have been buzzing with activity as officials there prepped to host the military base’s annual weekend-long deer hunt for a couple thousand archers who’d harvest a couple hundred whitetails.
This year, however, Camp Ripley transitioned the 53,000-acre National Guard base’s hunting season from a one-time event to a season-long opportunity for 150 hunters to access per day – and the results are what they wanted.

Trapping season 2024 features new regulations, and a new zone in Minnesota

Otter, bobcat, and fisher trapping seasons in Minnesota will change this year with a longer window for otters, and a larger geographic reach to take one bobcat and one fisher.
“The primary change is that you’re now allowed to take both fishers and bobcats statewide, including southern Minnesota,” said John Erb, DNR furbearer and wolf research scientist.
The limits on all the species is unchanged – still only five bobcats, two pine martens and fishers combined, and four otters may be trapped by hunters across the state.

Antlerless permit added to Ohio’s 2024 firearms deer season in attempt to increase doe harvest

Ohio’s deer management authorities expect the overall harvest to be about 10% higher than it was last year due to simple deer population dynamics.
Last year’s overall harvest checked in right around 213,000 deer, so a 10% increase this year would put Ohio hunters in the neighborhood of a quarter million deer being harvested.
“A lot of that will depend on the weather,” said Mike Tonkovich, the ODNR Division of Wildlife’s deer project administrator.

Fall is the time to target Iowa’s rivers for fishing

Fall is a great time to catch fish in Iowa’s rivers.
“You are never far from one of Iowa’s many rivers,” said Greg Gelwicks, Iowa DNR interior rivers research biologist. “Fall is a great time to give them a try.”
Fish become more active and hungry when the stream temperature drops. “Look for actively feeding fish where riffles enter pools or rocky areas,” Gelwicks said. “They sit there out of the current and wait for food to come by.”

Biologists preparing to analyze images from first full year of Michigan’s wolf camera study

Michigan Department of Natural Resources officials are assessing camera damage and preparing to analyze as many as 6 million trail camera images following the first full year of an ongoing wolf abundance project.
DNR Wildlife Research Specialist Tyler Petroelje presented an update to the Michigan Natural Resources Commission in October on an effort that began as a pilot in 2022 to better estimate Michigan’s wolf population.

Bass, walleye catch rates improve but perch rate remains flat in Michigan’s Bays de Noc

Anglers are catching more smallmouth bass and walleyes while the perch harvest has remained flat in the Bays de Noc in recent years, trends influenced in part by invasive mussels and round gobies.
Department of Natural Resources officials in October presented an update to the Michigan Natural Resources Commission on fisheries research and management efforts in the bays, where the state has stocked walleyes since the 1970s to counter overfishing in the decades prior.
