Lots of bass in Minnesota’s Big Fish Lake; they’re just not very … big

The first feature that jumps out about Big Fish Lake in western Stearns County is its extremely clear water. You can typically see quite easily 15 to 20 feet down into this 557-acre lake north of Cold Spring, which obviously makes it quite attractive for recreational use during the summer months.

Ohio man pleads guilty to poaching world-class typical whitetail

An Ohio man who illegally killed a trophy buck last year in Clinton County pleaded guilty to criminal charges related to the case.
C.J. Alexander, 28, was indicted on numerous criminal charges this summer relating to the Nov. 9, 2023, alleged poaching of a would-be world-class typical whitetail. Alexander had claimed that he killed the 18-point buck on land owned by his sister when in fact the kill came on property that he did not have permission to hunt, according to ODNR investigators.

Minnesota’s Mille Lacs anglers could see two-walleye winter limit

For the first time since 2015, the Minnesota DNR is entertaining a two-walleye limit on Lake Mille Lacs this winter due to a gill-net survey showing high forage numbers and large young walleyes.
An abundance of yellow perch and tullibees began to lead to a poor walleye bite toward the end of the summer on the 132,000-acre lake, and that trend likely will continue into the winter and spring, potentially leading to less restrictive walleye-harvest regulations.

Steve Carney: The great doe stare-down, and a pulley assist for the truck bed

I hated the ladder stand the minute I climbed into it. It’s a double-wide, two-person stand that’s on a single tree. The bottom line: I was uncomfortable because I looked like a human billboard.
And then it happened. A huge doe stepped out of the poplars at 225 yards and busted me right away. She looked left and started toward me from at least two football fields away.
