Grasslands bill revitalized, introduced in U.S. House

A program aimed at protecting and restoring U.S. grasslands that has languished in Congress for several years was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives on Oct. 9 by a collective of both Republicans and Democrats.
The North American Grasslands Conservation Act is modeled after the well-known North American Wetlands Conservation Act, which, according to Ducks Unlimited, has provided grants totaling more than $2.1 billion that leveraged over $4.3 billion for NAWCA projects through matching funds.

Minnesota’s ’24 pheasant opener below average for many

Sleepy Eye was wide awake with activity while hosting the Governor’s Pheasant Hunting Opener on Friday, Oct. 11 and Saturday, Oct. 12. Unlike last year’s opener in Owatonna, rainy weather held off in south-central Minnesota, with dry conditions persisting as hunters flocked to Brown County’s huntable lands.
While many took to the fields, there was minimal success across the state, even in prime pheasant range in the south-central region where the opener event was held.

Minnesota’s 2024 bear season a ‘complete 180’ from last

As the 2024 Minnesota bear season closed on Sunday, Oct. 13, the season’s harvest was estimated just above 3,400 bruins as of Friday, Oct. 11. While DNR estimates after the official end to the season weren’t available, department officials say the kill could hit just above 3,500.
“Very few bears are taken at the end of the season, and it has really slowed down,” said Andrew Tri, Minnesota DNR bear research scientist.
Likely, the finalized kill will be nearly double that of a year ago, when the species’ natural dining room provided most of what bears needed heading into the winter months.

Journey of Buck 5700 in Wisconsin deer study provides three valuable years of information

On Valentine’s Day in the winter of 2017, an 8-month-old buck was captured using a drop net in Iowa County, Wis. He weighed 90 pounds and tested negative, via a rectal biopsy, for chronic wasting disease.
A team of researchers fitted the fawn with an expandable GPS collar, designed with elastic and pleats that would pop and allow it to grow along with the deer’s neck as he matured. They called him Buck 5700, and he wore the collar for three full breeding seasons, giving researchers valuable data about how and where he moved during 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Research shows largemouth bass are at home in Chicago River boat slip

How fish adapt to life in large urban rivers is one of the questions Dr. Austin Happel is trying to answer.
Largemouth bass is a species of particular interest to Happel, a research biologist at the Shedd Aquarim in Chicago. In a partnership with Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant and Purdue University, Happel has been tracking fish movements in the Chicago River for more than a year. The findings have certainly been interesting – both for scientists and for the average angler.

Wisconsin Facebook group aims to better understand where wolves exist on state’s landscape

The Wisconsin Citizen Wolf Count Facebook group began logging trail camera photos of wolves by township and county in February 2023 after group leaders repeatedly asked the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to take up this type of effort.
When the DNR passed on his suggestion, group leader Corky Meyer, of Boltonville, decided he would take it upon himself to gather this information. Meyer has been a member of a number of conservation groups for decades and has closely followed the wolf conflict issue.
“In talking with the DNR, they said it would never work,” Meyer said. “In February of ’23, I said, ‘Aw, heck, I’ll do it myself.’”
