Northern Zone firearms deer seasons about to begin in New York

While hunting seasons in New York – including archery seasons – have begun incrementally in recent weeks, deer season fully arrives, at least in the Northern Zone, in the days ahead.
The muzzleloading season, which begins the Saturday following Columbus Day, starts Oct. 19 in the Northern Zone. A week later, the big game, or rifle season begins on Oct. 26 and runs through Dec. 8. Crossbow hunters can also go afield with their implements in the Northern Zone starting Oct. 16.

California’s largest estuary is in crisis. Is the state discriminating against those who fish there?

More than two dozen fishing rods were braced against the railing of San Francisco’s Pier 7, their lines dangling into the Bay. People chatted on the benches, shouting in Cantonese and leaping up when one of the rods bent or jiggled.
One after another, the men and women at the end of the pier reeled in striped bass as long as an arm, and even thicker.
But not King Lee, a 72-year-old retired janitor who takes the bus to the pier almost every day. It had been 10 days since he had last caught anything worth eating. “Lucky, lucky, lucky guy,” Lee said, watching an angler reeling in a thrashing fish. “Today, I got nothing. I hope, later, I get one like this.”

Minnesota man charged with killing a protected gray wolf

A 30-year-old Hinckley man has been charged with killing a federally-protected gray wolf in 2021, a gross misdemeanor, according to a late-September court filing in Pine County District Court.
In addition, Brady Tyler Harth also faces gross misdemeanor charges of transporting illegal big-game animals (a whitetail buck and a bear) in 2021 and 2022. Gross misdemeanors are punishable by up to a year in jail, a $3,000 fine, or both. Further, Harth was charged with illegally possessing the deer and bear, which DNR officials say were taken illegally.

Catching up with former Ohio fish chief: Rich Carter stays busy fishing tournament circuits

When a former Ohio Division of Wildlife (DOW) “fish chief” retired after an 18-year run with the division, the “Gone fishing” sign that appeared on his front door never had a more appropriate landing zone.
Rich Carter retired in February 2023 and began a fishing quest that has seen him average four days a week on waters from Florida to Minnesota.

Bill Ziegler: New beaver policy detrimental to Michigan trout, streams

As beaver populations have grown to all-time historical highs the Michigan Department of Natural Resources policy and rules regulating management and control of these prolific rodents had become more liberal. The beaver is, of course, a valuable native furbearer; however trout also are extremely valuable and typically lose out when abundant beaver overwhelm Michigan’s relatively lower gradient trout streams.
In a recent major change of DNR policy, a group of DNR staff have reversed the trend of allowing fairly liberal beaver control measures on high value Michigan trout streams.
